Do you have the same beliefs as your parents?

This thread is not about whether or not there is a god, that's been discussed into boredom.

I simply ask this: Do you believe the same as your parents? I find this interesting because a lot of people base their faith, or lack of such, by how they were raised. Some will argue that they don't, although they actually do.

In my case, I come from a christian family. Not the kind of Christians that go to church all the time and pray every night, but follow Christian tradition in terms of marriage, christening and such. I've decided for myself that I don't believe in it, and I consider myself an atheist, with the reluctant approval of my family.

So are you simply following the faith you've been raised into, or have you made an independent opinion when it comes to religion?

 

Both my parents are Christians like yours, not regular church-goers, but pray daily and had me baptist and such.

But when it comes to me, I think I am just to intelligent to consider myself a Christian, believing in something so unprovable.

 

no my mom is "Religous" and i fail to see her reasooning. she was brought up in a religous house so she is use to, but only goes to cburch once in a while .

 

My parents took me to church when I was little but we rarely go to church now. I have never told my parents that I am an atheist nor do I plan to because I live in Alabama. I am probably one out of five people who are atheists in my high school. If I told anyone I was an atheist I would be shunned. My parents never forced a religion on me and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't really care if I was a atheist but I just don't plan on telling them but if they asked me I suppose I would tell them. I'm really glad that I was never forced into a religion before I could figure out how preposterous the whole thing is.

 

the way you have worked it I cannot answer as i do not have a faith. tho neither do my parents. my parents however let me decide what to believe, I was also one of those lucky kids born with the ability to derive reality from fairy tale.

 

I do not follow my parents' religion either. They are both Christian, but like your parents, do not attend on a regular basis, save for Easter, Christmas, etc.

I don't agree with it, which causes many issues in our household, to say the least.

 

So you have to act religious to be accepted in your community?

 

Both my parents are catholic (my dad is somewhat agnostic), I was raised catholic too, but we didn´t go to church often. I did do a communion when I was around 10.

At the age of 17 I became an atheist.

 

This turned out to be quite boring. Somebody vote yes already!

 

Yes, I was raised to believe so, but I've come to the point in my life when I start questioning my beliefs. Up until I was around 11 or 12 I blindly followed, but now I truly realize why I believe in God and why I do what I do.

 

I am entirely different beliefs than my parents, though it's not because of being rebellious like some people.

 

I was never religious, but my mother's religious ways have influenced me.
She's a budda though, so she's the type to keep to herself and believe in peace, not being greedy, etc..

It's not like Christian where you have to pray and there are many strict rules, her thing is more of a way of life.

I do find myself getting influenced by it... instead of killing bugs I often let them outside, and I don't like seeing things die...

Sounds like maybe you're one of those rebellious ones.

 

My entire family is Christian. It makes life hard sometimes. I've tried to explain my reasoning, but most just don't accept logic.

 

Family (minus perhaps my mother, I'd say she's agnostic if not an atheist) is Catholic and goes to church every Sunday. I'm an atheist/nontheist but mostly I just don't care about religion anymore, there are so many more interesting things to think about.

 

My parents are christian. I am christian. Christian for life - and proud to be one

 

My Mom is a Christian, my Dad is a Catholic, I'm a Deist borderline Atheist. However both of my parents are basically inactive in their church

 

By "faith" do you mean just religious faith? what about political faith? Like democrat or Republican or whatever. That's another big one kids follow their parents in

 

Both of my parents are hardcore Catholics. As in they teach classes, know the priests well, church weekly, serve communion, etc. I'm an agnostic.
