Learning different languages - Rosetta Stone?

I'm very interested about learning a Scandinavian language for no particular reason. Can anyone tell me what is a good Scandinavian language to learn? I'm more interested in speaking than writing it if that means anything, and whats a good program to use to learn it?

I've always heard about Rosetta Stone and how it works wonders, they also offer Swedish. But I'm wondering if anyone here has tried it. And if you have how did it work for you? Plus I really don't want to spend over $100 on a program, and considering all 3 lessons from Rosetta Stone cost near $500 that's gonna be a no-go. Unless some one can show me where to get it for free?

I would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out as this sounds like something constructive I can do for the summer. Along with the whole Scandinavian language thing it doesnt have to be, I just always thought Scandinavian culture was interesting, and I am very open about other languages I could learn instead. (except Spanish, French, or German) Greek sounds like another language I would like to learn (Rosetta Stone offers it also).

I used RS for Spanish and it's not bad, umm for free, there is always Torrents, you can try that. www.torrentz.com Good luck bro. Also i know you wanna learn a Scandinavian language, but like what is that gonna be used for anything? Unless your Traveling Sales man/woman, or Traveling Military then why learn a Scandinavian Language, its kind of off set, if u know what i mean =/ Just think is it a language i will use in the future? Or will i forget it?

I understand what you mean by it not being practical, but everyone knows spanish, I want a language that not a lot of people speak and its kinda unique. I mean its not something I would use everyday but its something to do in the summer =\

Ya, I know how you feel, but unless you speak it on a semi regular basis, you will forget it. Sorry to shoot you down.

Not everyone. If you want to use your time effectively (and I'm assuming that you're still in school, by your comment about Summer), then any language learning should really be practical. Being bilingual will help so much in your future life, and should really be chosen by the place you will be living. If you live anywhere in the United States, Spanish would be the most practical, especially if you live in the South West. Also languages that would be smart to learn is Chinese, German, French, etc. Scandinavian would probably be too obscure of a language to be useful in your future, and you may find yourself disappointed with any progress you obtain.

Swedish if you wanna learn a scandinavian laguage :D

Norway understand Sweden better then Sweden understand Norway
Same with Denmark. Danish people can understand Swedish people better than Swedish people can understand Danish.
Finnish is too fucked up and different. Every other Scandinavian country hates Finnish :p Also Finland is a 2 language country. Both Finnish and Swedish is used.
So with Swedish you are best prepared in Scandinavia.

Also if you need any help with Swedish I'll be more than happy to help you :)

Thanks man I really appreciate it. Do you live in that area because you obviously sound very edcuated. I always liked the culture up there and plan to vacation there one day so I wanna learn swedish. I feel my best option is just to save up to but Rosetta Stone or I could find a illegal version online but I feel like I would be missing out on something and could only have near half the content that I could get if I bought the full thing.

    Well, I personally like Livemocha.com

It's pretty simple, I learned some basic conversational German from them. It's at least a starting point and it's completely free. I think it would be worth a shot.

    Yes I live in Sweden.
Feel free to ask if it's anything you would like to know about Sweden or the Swedish language :)

And also apparently there are a lot of torrents with material from rosetta stone.
Found these 2 which looks good:
