can you crossfire two different 4850s?

I have a Diamond HD4850 and i'm wondering if you can crossfire with another one, that has different specs.

 

yes you can. manufacter doesn't matter as long as its the same model and has the same amount of video ram

 

Do you know whether or not your motherboard is SLI or Crossfire compatible?

 

Well one of the only diamonds I can find is by viper... it's about 3x the gbyte/s.

I can't say I'd recommend it. They may have different clock speeds and may be slightly different firmwares, etc etc.

It'd be best to either upgrade to a 4870 (or 4890?) or stick with one card anyway.

 

wait wtf..by viper? i didnt even know thats a manufacturer. core clocks and shader clocks dont matter either, its only beneficial if one is higher clocks and you can just use rivatuner to change the clocks to be the same anyways. in other words...you can crossfire an asus hd4870 DK with a diamond hd4870.

 

viper is high end gaming, and are known for their 10000rpm hard drives. I'll need a bigger screen for another 4850 as I already play crysis on enthuiast with 16x AA and run around 25 fps.

upgrading to a 4870 or 4890 would be extremely stupid, the difference is barely noticable. I've clocked my 4850 past 4890 specs.

 

well you can clock the 4890 even higher!

^^ and two 4850s is cheaper than a 4890. Buying the best cards on the market is never worth it, I went for a 4850 over a 4870 as the price difference wasn't worth the performance. I'm probably going to get a 24 inch asus with 1080p, they're around 250$.
