Swine Flu. Could this be the next worldwide Pandemic?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090424/ap_on_he_me/med_swine_flu

The closest flu Pandemic of this strain was the 1918 flu pandemic (commonly referred to as the Spanish flu) was an influenza pandemic that spread to nearly every part of the world. It was caused by an unusually severe and deadly Influenza A virus strain of subtype H1N1. It is estimated that anywhere from 20 to 100 million people were killed worldwide. About more than double the people killed in the First World War.

The threat level has been deemed at its current Phase 3 until officials gets a clearer picture at what is going on. Phase 6 would mean officials are calling the outbreak a pandemic.

    Discuss.

I thought the avian flu and sars were supposed to be pandemics.

It's mostly hype. Yes it's bad but it's not as horrible as is being said.

First it was west nile, then bird flu, then MRSA; not to mention all the other random ones like sars thrown in there.

    I doubt anything will happen.

Oh yeah, I remember the West Nile scare. I don't remember the cause of it, but I remember my school giving masks and stuff to us.

On the news channel I watch, they said a few school districts were closed for the week. They also said that about 30 people here were affected, and a few deaths. Damn, I wish they closed my school :\ .

Its just hitting in the center of the country. not to many cases here in the north even though san luis potosi is near of here, my mom is doctor, and she told me that in the hospital where she works.. there are no people with the swine flu, maybe it isnt too bad to be a worldwide pandemic.

EDIT: just saw this on the news... people in Israel and France have been reported with swine flu. All of them visited Mexico.

After seeing SARS, I am not denying anything.

Although it would be very difficult for this to get "worldwide".

I thought it was only in Mexico, Canada, and America so far?

Ah yeah, I heard about this today... 20 people in the US have died? That's a bit startling seeing as it's infulenza... on the other hand, this may be one of those mad cow or sars scares which will even out eventually..

I think the media is hyping it up too much, yes it is something to worry about a bit but nothing that will become a epidemic. I say not to believe the hype.

Still it is very scary. I don't believe it will reach "Phase 6", because it has been only spread in Mexico for the time being, the way officials and health organisations, as well as how much scientists know about the disease will determine how much it is spread, and ultimately how much it kills.
