"Thanks" System - easier way to gain trust.

I have found this idea being used among the internet, and it seems to be very successful. After receiving alot of support and critisizm, I have re-created my thread and ideas to work better with our unique community. This idea is that, we have a "thanks" system; where certain members can either give or receive thanks - and the points would appear just under post count. Different users would be worth different ammounts of points. This isn't like the reputation system sythe trashed a few years ago, this will not be abused - because it isn't possible to be abused. If you can think of any way that someone could bypass this, tell me; and I will mould the idea into something more suitable. Please do not post critisizm unless you have read my whole thread. Read on...

    ******************************

    Ranks:[IMG]
    Negative Thanks - Useless!
    0-5 Thanks - New member.
    6-19 thanks - Active member.
    20-39 thanks - Helpful member.
    40-99 thanks - great contributer
100-249 thanks - Wise Old Man.
    250-499 thanks - Respected Member.
    500-999 thanks - Honor'd Member.
    1000+ thanks - Genious

    ******************************

The ranks will be able to give a certain ammount of points to other players, or take away a certain ammount of points. To start off this system; anyone who's account was created before January 1st, 2008; and had a post count of atleast 100 - would automatically receive 20 points the day this hack was put into use (if ever).

Limit of Points you Can send Someone [per 50 day period]

    Useless Rank - 0 points.
New member Rank - 0 points.
Active member Rank - (+)1 point.
Helpful Rank Rank - (+)anywhere within 2 points.
Great Contributer Rank - (+)anywhere within 4 points.
Wise Old Man rank - (+/-)anywhere within 10 points.
    Respected Member - (+/-)anywhere within 15 points.
    Veteran of Sythe.org (2005) - (+/-)anywhere within 20 points.
User Educator - (+/-) Anywhere within 20 points.
    Honor'd Member - (+/-) Anywhere within 40 points.
    Moderator - (+/-) anywhere within 50 points.
Genious Rank - (+/-) anywhere within 75 points.
Global Moderator - (+/-) anywhere within 100 points.
Administrator - As many as they deem appropriate.

    ******************************

    Possible Rules:[IMG]
    1. Demanding thanks after a trade or helping someone will result in an infraction; whither or not they give it is their decision alone.
    2. Any abusing of the thanks system will not be tollerated, appropriate action will be taken.
    3. Purposefully gaining negative thanks is not allowed.
    4. If negative thanks is given, you must provide a reason in the box stated, and if you are caught removing thanks without reason, you will be infracted.
    5. You cannot tell someone if you took thanks from them; posting that you did it is infractable.

    Reasons to give thanks:[IMG]
    • Someone answers a question you have.
    • Someone price checks your account for you, after asking in PCT.
    • Someone Middle Man's your trade.
    • Someone is a nice person, and just deserves it.
    • Someone is very active in all sections of the forums; and post helpful responses to threads.
    • You trade with someone, and the trade work out with no problems.

    Reasons to Take Away Thanks;[IMG]
    • Someone scams you during a trade.
    • Someone leaves the conversation, or blocks you; after you ask to use a MM.
    • Someone posts rude or hateful words towards someones thread.
    • Someone is spamming a thread.
    • Someone posts plagurized, rude, or useless text.

    Cautions:[IMG]
    • Avoid giving thanks for smaller things.
    • Give thanks within reason. Don't give 100 thanks to someone who just price checked your account for you ;)
    • If someone is trying to get you to give them thanks, without saying it; do not fall for this.
This would not be to REPLACE vouches - but an easy thing to go along with vouches and show that you are trusted on sythe.org. Most of all this would help members become more active in all areas of the community; trying to give help to anyone possible. More users would come to just "sell their shit then leave", but enjoy giving and receiving thanks and work towards a higher rank, until they are a useful and trusted member of the community. People of'course would try to abuse this; but for the most part I think with the help of everyone's responses to my thread - I've been able to solve most of these problems. It's natural for people to try to cheat the system, we would just have to be one step ahead of them (something Jagex fails to do;)). It would be obvious someone had posted fake vouches, if they had negative thanks, yet 10-20 vouches.

    Optional Idea:[IMG]
A thread to post Middle Man's and Trades (where the other person went first), valued over 50 USD in risked wealth. After posting (with picture proof) you would receive another 20 thanks, if appropriate. The other person would have to be ranked as "respected member" or lower, and they would also post on the thread, saying the trade went well. This would be used for the many trades and Middle Man's that go on, selling or MM'ing to very low trusted members on sythe. This way you could still get thanks after such a risk. This would be the only time it is not against the rules to ask for thanks.

I know this is a big step, and alot of times people don't like change - but I sincerely think this would help the sythe.org scamming problem. It would show how much each member had contributed; and give us a little more fun on sythe.org. It would obviously be easier to find a small flaw in this idea and decline it right away, rather than actually working to help this hack go into progress onto our VB website; but in the long run it would save alot of work for the moderators and admins when 90% of the scammers have given up; due to lack of profit. This idea is only developing; but with your responses we can mould it into something absolutely smashing!:D

Your thoughts, ideas, and constructive critisizm is greatly appreciated!

I disagree. I've used a few forums that use this method and they have all failed. Some people just aren't moderator material.

Darthatron, you misunderstood my idea. I am not saying you need that many posts to become a mod, I am saying a mod can GIVE away that many thank points.

Ohh, I thought you meant that many thank points got that position.

I guess its a pretty good idea seeing as only real members of sythe can give

    away thank points.

This will allow for many fake thanks. Not a good idea. Also I'm pretty sure this was suggested and denied multiple times in the past.

Yes well there will always be flaws with any sort of system, and you have to deal with the fact that nothing's perfect. The real question is would this help sythe.org out at all? Well yes, I think for the most part it would benifit this website. Now you have to think of all possible problems it would cause, weigh the results, and give some good feedback on how to solve each of these problems. Every problem has a solution; it just requires something I like to call thinking ^_^.

Nothing is wrong with the thanks system. Contrary to what you said, i've seen many forums thrive with this addon. Members who contribute are rewarded with thanks which are shown under their username, people will want to contribute more to get more thanks. No one is replacing it with vouches, it just shows how helpful you are.

It couldn't really be used as a standard for trust really because of the abuse that would occur from it. I don't see a problem with it though, I think it would just be another little perk that we could use- no harm done. Not to mention if some want to use it as a standard for trade, it could be done because it would show the relative amount of work a person has done on the site. It's a nice perk that would give members some credit for their contributions. I would say go for it, Sythe could use some new interesting changes.

Thanks graham. Also, it would create a "hook" to make people at sythe.org want to join and stay in the community. This would get alot of new potential legit members into our community.

    Insanosky,

That message is spam (I'm not going to report it but yes it's spam). If your going to post telling me why my idea won't work, give a reasoning to support your theory. Too many people decline ideas just because "they can" & it's easy. Also because they are post count whores and could care less about the idea.

That wasn't spam, he was just saying he doesn't think the system would work because it's similar to the reputation system which other forums have installed, but I actually think this could work- or at least be a cool edition ^_^

Yeah agreed. I just want some constructive critisism (large posts about why the idea won't work) for once; that way I can mould the idea into a better and more useful system. Rather than people just saying "this won't work..." lol.
