Why are iFrames looked down upon so harshly?

I've been experimenting with them a bit and I see nothing wrong.. Everything renders properly in Firefox 2/3 and IE...

Is there some alternative that I should be using instead?

What are you trying to achieve with iframes? Most of the time, you can do what you need without an iframe.

If you're using iframes to include content from other pages on a single page, you should use PHP's include() instead. Also, google won't index anything in the iframe (if it does, it'll appear as a separate page) so a page with several iframes may appear odd in google's cache.
