    Beware: Conficker C!

    http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/128643/beware-conficker-worm-come-april-1/

There is the link to the full story.

If you don't feel like reading it, I'll give you a breif summary.

Hackers have created a new malware that is set to be launched/released on April 1st. Conficker first bubbled up in late 2008 and began making headlines in January as known infections topped 9 million computers. Now in its third variant, Conficker C, the worm has grown incredibly complicated, powerful, and virulent... The reason people can't track Conficker C is because it uses 50,000 + addressed to hide its tracks.

Please note, this is quite serious, just because it's on April Fools Day doesn't mean you should neglect this!

    Beware: Conficker C!

It's pretty annoying to clean if you have a network too... It spreads through flash drives, and tries getting over the network... You have to take each computer offline and make sure it's clean before putting it back... pain in the ass

Also, make sure your flash drives are clean because if after cleaning you plug yours in, it'll start spreading again >__>

You seem to know about it. Have any past experiences with it? You get infected?

What kind of virus scanner is reccomended to get it off? Malwarebytes is usually good for me, what would you reccomend?

Also, if anyone has removable media, it would be wise for you to delete any file called "autorun.inf", create a folder called "autorun.inf", and place any file in there. (Size/type/name don't matter.)

Conficker will try creating autorun.inf file on your flash drive, but it won't work with the folder in place...

Home network got infected, school got infected. I didn't do anything about it at school (mainly because I can't).

I only formatted the windows computers...

Happened to my school as well. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the people in my Computer Science classes had it on their flash drives as well...

What is a good way to prevent getting it on your computer?

If I leave it off, with all of the componants out of it for the full day, will that lower the risk?

Best way to prevent any infection is to disconnect from the internet and use group policies to disable all media.

Thanks for the warning. I don't use a wireless connection thankfully so that lowers my chances.

It could be, but there are already bigger in existence.

Just because you are offline, it does not mean you're safe.

Also, keep in mind, no concrete evidence has been found out about what exactly it will do on April first...

I was reading an article about this and they linked to a website that can scan if you are infected and also provides removal tools for single pc's or for removal across a network. Im assuming its legit =S I will use it this afternoon to at least scan my computer anyway but I figured this community may want to know about it the site. www.bdtools.net

    Beware: Conficker C!

    It's nationwide.

It's effects are not known at all, but it is known for sure that it's going to do something on April 1.

If it's a botnet, then it'll more than certainly have enough power to knock entire countries offline... It would be cool if they went after google. :)

Some people are saying that it's waiting until April 1 until it'll begin sending personal data (such as passwords, credit card details/etc) to a central unit...

Basically, no one knows. Best thing to do is to avoid infection altogether.

If you want to keep your computer offline, might as well turn it off for all of April 1; there might be some damage done locally on your machine...
