I would assume some very very expensive software... And to make models you do not need to know how to code.

You'd need experience in one or more of the following, depending on just what you want to do:

    -Graphics
    -Advanced Graphics
    -Coding
    -Advanced Coding

For example, game level designers need a little of both, more towards coding, while the actual graphic artists that add texture and color need more graphics.

i was thinking of buying this program:
    http://www.thegamecreators.com/?f=ac3d
it seems pretty easy to use. and looks like what i need to make models.
just how do i turn one of these models into a character that someone can play as?

    blizzard and rockstar games and those big companies probably use any of the following programs (for modeling);
    Autodesk 3D Studio Max
    Autodesk Maya
    Autodesk Softimage XSI

but that has nothing to do with the programming forums..
and what do you mean with
"know how to like code" ??
but anyway.. you don't have to be a programmer to work for a game company, they often hire a bunch of programmers that code and a bunch of designer that models and so on... I have experience of 3Ds Max and it's awesome hate maya tho... and I have barely tried softimage so I can't speak for that.. but it's better than maya imo

I promise, no 3d modeling program is easy to use... you need experience to create good looking things.. but sure, simple lowpoly models for an ugly game doesn't take that much time...

you program... if you want to create a game yourself you have to learn to program first.. probably c++
and then program the models to move in a certain way when a button is pressed on the keyboard or whatever...

i found probably the best modeling program, zbrush. it is what the makers of gears of war used to make there characters/weapons.
im going to try and get the hang of using it, and probably try making some CS;s skins as a start.
the only problem is that it costs $550, currently using the trial.

no, I would recommend to create your model in a modeling program like 3ds max, or if you need a free program use blender 3d or Cinema 4D
and then use ZBrush to make the characters more realistic, don't just use ZBrush, since it isn't what it is created for...

MilkShape 3D is really simple to start with, and it has many file-types it can export to.

yes I have used it, and most people first create their models in a 3d program like 3ds max and then move it to zbrush and retouch it so it looks better and not as fake as it may do on a simple model... but sure, you can use it to model from scratch, but I think it is harder...

well, I started at home by my self with 3Ds Max for a couple of years ago and learned some and now I'm going on a school with courses in 3Ds Max... I haven't really started with any big project that i'm happy with but it takes time to become good... and no, I haven't done any games with my models...

I don't know about them, but coders would likely use Microsoft Visual Studio.

As for modelling, they'd probably use some product from Autodesk, such as 3DSMax or Maya, or Cinema4D.

XNA, and use realm crafter. Sounds like you have very basic knowledge, they should get you through realm crafter.

Not that I understood much of what you tried to say, but I hardly believe that any big game is done with XNA...

I'm pretty sure that no (big) serious game company uses C4D...
3DS Max, Maya or SoftImage XSI <-- one of those (all of them Autodesk products)

Alot of big companies use Gamebryo to make their games including EA, Activision and Capcom.

As for graphics it really depends what you feel comfortable using, I believe they use models in the format ".X" but im not 100% sure, My friend is currently in a game programmer course under microsoft apprenticeship and he says that is what they use.

idk but i think those big companies have their own 3d and game engine
especially made for their company, they dont use commercial 3d engines i guess

Although you seem to be banned, at the moment, there's a good 3D Modeling program called Blender. It's nice, open source, free, and cross-platform, and I would imagine could do the same job many expensive 3d modelers would do.

I'm no expert in 3D modeling, so I wouldn't know how to use this, but some that I do know say it's great, others prefer Maya 3D and, others still, 3ds max. There is no clear winner, just pick the one that suits you.

It'd be good idea to find information on your selected software. Most of the time, that's the expensive software that's got loads of people behind it in the industry and in many colleges, but there are many universities, such as Tufts University, School of Arts and Sciences that offer this program, and free of charge with their opencourseware (LOVE this in any uni. MIT, Stanford, UC Berkeley, and now Tufts, I just love this) (opencourseware for Blender 3D available here, by Neal Hirsig).

There's also a free book online on wikibooks called Blender 3D: Noob to Pro, it looks like it'd be worth a look at, as well.

I hope you have fun learning how to model 3D graphics, and I wish you luck in your career as a 3D modeler.

Also, to concur with others here, this isn't meant to be in the programming section, it would probably be, if I'm right, best to be put in the "General GFX Talk" or "GFX Help, Tutorials and Advice" forum in the Graphics section (unless they're specifically for 2D graphics, which would be kind of silly).

Although it's true that many companies may use their own game engines, this has nothing to do with 3d modeling. They usually use commercial 3d modeling software in order to make the graphics that would, then, be used by their game engine.
