    Was God an Alien?

"In World War 2 an American fighter pilot crash-landed in the Brazilian rainforest where he was discovered by an isolated tribe of natives. Impressed by his technical gadgetry and his descent from the sky, these primitive people elevated him to the status of a god and created a religion around him. Today, the “proof” of their religion consists of a series of artifacts hanging from tree branches, including items such as a broken plane engine, an empty cigarette lighter and a rusting pocketknife. But to the educated reader, these artifacts are instead testimony to the fact that the artifacts of a religion are not proof of the religion itself but rather proof of the actual event which occurred (and was quite possibly misinterpreted). As Arthur C. Clarke once said, “any sufficiently advanced technology is perceived as miracle”. Could Christianity be the product of a similar misinterpretation?

In the 1960’s, while mankind was rapidly breaking the shackles of his home planet and venturing out into the nearby Cosmos, the idea naturally evolved that maybe our planet had been visited by extra-terrestrials in the distant past. When Erich von Daniken released his famous book, Chariots of the Gods, in 1968, the hypothesis arose that maybe God was the primitive misinterpretation of extra-terrestrials visiting Earth, whose high technology was perceived as miracle, and may have formed the basis for many of the ancient religions around the world.

    Was God an Alien?
To its credit, this hypothesis can explain all of the events in the Bible and in other ancient religious documents all throughout the world. If it is assumed that it is possible for space aliens to travel a number of light years to Earth in the first place, then a number of the stories in the Bible can be explained in terms of extra-terrestrial intervention. We are told in the Bible that the three wise men followed a moving star, which led them to the location of Jesus. It has been postulated that maybe this star was really Haley’s Comet, as calculations suggest that the comet was in the sky at the time; however, a comet would be pointless and difficult to follow. Alternatively, believers of the “ancient astronaut” theory have suggested that the star could have been a UFO, which the wise men were compelled to follow via telepathic communication with the aliens (which is commonly reported in alien abduction reports).

The birth of Jesus might be elucidated by the speculation that aliens visited Mary in her sleep (which she perceived as a dream in which she was visited by angels). The aliens could have artificially inseminated her with genetically engineered, or possibly even alien sperm; and this could explain the superhuman abilities which Jesus was reported to have had, and also the fact that Mary gave birth while she was still a virgin. So, perhaps Jesus was one of the first alien-human hybrids.

This idea has spawned a number of alien cults, the most popular being the Raelian Movement (which has over 35,000 members in 85 countries). According to this cult, scientists from another planet used Earth as a giant biological laboratory, on which they created all life using DNA, and created man in their own image. In December 1973, a French journalist (Rael) was supposedly contacted by a visitor from this other planet, and was dictated a message (basically consisting of a re-translation of the Bible in terms of extra-terrestrial intervention). He has now published this message as a series of books, which you can order over the Internet from the Raelian Revolution Virtual Shop. Rael was also asked to prepare an embassy for the aliens where they could officially land among us, bringing with them all the prophets as predicted by every religion.

There is certainly a degree of romance and mystery to this theory, and it is attractive in its consistency with our current worldview and worldwide religions, but unfortunately it is far from proven. In a sense the aliens of this age have superceded the God of previous generations, in that any unexplained phenomena can now be attributed to some bizarre form of advanced alien technology, rather than to divine intervention. Admittedly, the evidence in support of the ancient astronaut theory is highly speculative and based on questionable data (consisting mainly of ancient myths and archaeological sites). In addition to this, the plausibility of interstellar travel is still debatable. So what are the alternatives?

In Fingerprints of the Gods, Graham Hancock interpreted many of the mysteries of the past with a more terrestrial hypothesis by suggesting the existence of an advanced race of people many years ago who originated on Antarctica. According to his hypothesis, these people developed a high level of technology, and comprehensively traveled and surveyed the Earth. He explained many of the ancient religions as the primitive misinterpretation of these individuals, who had a slightly different appearance, and whose technology would have been perceived as magic. He suggested that this hypothetical civilization was destroyed during a polar shift when Antarctica was again covered in ice.

But maybe neither of these hypotheses are necessary. Yes, it is possible that visitors from outer space did land on earth a few thousand years ago and communicate with our ancestors. But it is also possible that the prehistoric people were responsible for their own art, technology and culture. Maybe the writings within the Bible are mere stories and poems attempting to explain our place and purpose in the Universe; perhaps also in an attempt to satisfy the basic human desire for an afterlife. And maybe these fundamental aspects of human nature similarly inspired the other worldwide religions.

Or maybe the fundamentalist Christians were right all along (after all, the Sun does revolve around the Earth, the Earth is at the centre of the Universe, and all the other religions are wrong anyway, aren’t they?)"

    Was God an Alien?

This is all under the assumption that modern man (modern as in 'the last couple thousand years') is more intelligent now than say 2500 years ago. - something that clearly isn't the case. More informed? Yes. Different capacity for intellect? Not likely.

If something was an alien, they would certainly not know it was human unless it looked an awful lot like a human and and acted like one. For it to fool them, it would have to us, too.

Also, your little dig at Christianity at the end makes no sense, really.
Those were all (except for the last one) beliefs of the Catholic church in the dark ages.
'Fundamentalist' or 'evangelical' Christianity is based solely on the Bible which makes no such claims.

    Was God an Alien?

Capacity for intellect means nothing if you haven't progressed scientifically... The undiscovered tribes today probably have a capacity for intellect, but they have never advanced technologically and scientifically and they understand much less about the world than people who live in developed countries.

The tribes of World War II have never been across the ocean and have never seen other people nor seen machines like airplanes before. They had no clue how airplanes worked nor where these people were from, which left no explanation other than that they were divine beings.

We can say the same for what happened 2000 years ago. And paintings of Jesus didn't pop up until hundreds of years after his crucifixion, and obviously those artists based their paintings on what other people told them and their own imagination, so we don't know exactly what Jesus looked like.

Well if most people still thought that the Earth was flat and at the center of the universe, I highly doubt they would know what an alien was... To them they were some beings from the sky that taught them stuff and performed "miracles" (just like the lost tribes of WW2 thought a lighter was a miracle).

    SOLELY on the BIBLE?

    Earth is flat:

"take the earth by the edges and shake the wicked out of it" (Job 38:12-13)

"[T]he devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them"
    (Matthew 4:1-12)

If you believed solely in the Bible, it would be just like having the scientific and technological knowledge of the people of the time... which is very very poor. And no do not tell me I am taking these passages out of context because there is no way they can mean something different no matter what context they are put in, they say what they say.

    Was God an Alien?

I doubt Christianity was founded by a person with much technology or an alien, because the religion is complex and had many rules and branches to it. People believe that Jesus is the son of God because the Old Testament prophesies a savior who will suffer, tell the future, and perform miracles, so they were already expecting a savior, unless Abraham was an alien, but there should at least be historical records like in the Bible that Jesus or any other popular people in the Bible were a strange looking human. I believe in aliens, I just don't know when they started their exploration of Earth.

    Was God an Alien?

I am not saying Christianity was founded by that person or alien, but by the people trying to explain the events that were happening. The complexity of the religion could easily be the result of human imagination shaping it for a thousand years. Just like the cargo cults of World War II created strange rituals in hopes of bringing back the metal flying machines filled with food.

Keep in mind that the stories of the Bible weren't written down until about 1000 years after Jesus' crucifixion. That means the stories of the Bible were passed down from generation to generation for 1000 years by word of mouth. Now we know that when you pass a passage by speech from one person to another person, the passage usually changes as human memory is not perfect. The same changes could have happened to the Bible as people left out some parts and added parts to it over those 1000 years.

And it is hard to know what Jesus looked like because no one drew a portrait of him during his time, and the first person to do so did 600 years after his crucifixion and he based it on how people described him, who received his description after it has been passed down for 600 years. The artist most likely used his imagination to draw most of him.

Aliens may have started exploring this planet thousands of years ago. Have you ever heard of the Nazca lines in Peru?

Entire mountaintops were cut off and all sorts of lines that resembled runways resembling an airport were formed. Plus, the mass of the mountaintops was nowhere to be found. And the animals that were drawn on the ground can only be seen if you are flying from above. Could ancient tribes have been trying to communicate with someone in the sky?

    Was God an Alien?

Wait, I might have missed something here...
So why exactly did aliens construct "airports" in the shapes of various animals? Doesn't seem rather practical nor efficient for that matter, why the hell would they try to navigate through that?
What about soil disturbances, etc? Wouldn't ships continuously landing on these "airports" leave some sort of trace effect on the land?

The lines and the animals drawn on the ground are different things. There is a network of different sized lines resembling an airport, and then there are shapes of animals drawn near it. One hypothesis is that after the aliens left and abandoned the airport, the tribes people drew the animals in hopes of getting the aliens to return. Compare this to how the cargo cults of World War II made bamboo replicas of airplanes and bamboo replicas of antennas at the abandoned airports in hopes of attracting the cargo of the western world.

We don't know what kind of ships were landing there. They may have been anti-gravity that left no trace on the ground.

There is no god. I can't put up a very good argument about this, but I got this assumption from Shredderbeam.

The typical god is a supernatural being who looks over us from the sky, has powers, and treats us based on our actions. If you ask me, thats a load of bs and it doesn't exist.

    Was God an Alien?

It's certainly possible. All of the major religions of today sprung up around the same time as each other, there's no way that is coincidence. For 2000 years, no one has been able to popularize a religion such as Christianity; we haven't had a "Jesus" in 2000 years.
Religions sprung up when civilizations were being formed and society needed control, rules and a "game plan" for establishing such complex systems, so to say there was some sort of extraterrestrial intervention is not absurd.

I suppose you've never heard the phrase 'all four corners of the earth'?
It's still widely used today by people who know that the world is round.
Just because that was the assumption back then (and the way people talked) doesn't mean the Bible is saying 'THE WORLD IS FLAT'.

The Bible isn't a scientific journal. It doesn't claim to be a scientific journal.

You might have an argument if the Bible said something to the effect of 'And God said "The world is flat"'.

The devil climbed atop a mountain and could see all the kingdoms of the world. This obviously implies that the Earth is flat, and you said fundamental Christians believe solely in the Bible, which then leads me to question their sanity.

Thank you! Of course there is nothing scientific in the Bible, tell that to the creationists that dismiss major scientific theories and push the story of Genesis. Genesis is what it is, an idea of how the Earth was created with no scientific knowledge, that is why I question the sanity of fundamental Christians.

Yes there is the possibilty that Jesus not god, was actually an alien, and god is really a mighty "unknown" power.

    That´ s what I have heart.
