    Stress Management

    Stress Management
I would like to start by providing an educational response to what stress is and define it further.

What is Stress? Well, there a multiple "homemade" responses as far as definitions go for stress. Basically, in my terms, stress is the reaction of the body and mind to everyday challenges, demands, and tasks. There are many ways stress can come about and more ways that stress is effectively diminished.

    What Causes Stress?
Stress is brought about by certain experiences or other circumstances known as stressors. A stressor is anything that causes stress. Things such as people, places, events and situations can all be potential stressors. Below are the categories of stressors:
    • Biological Stressors- These have to do with your health. Anything to do with an illness, a disability, or an injury.
    • Environmental Stressors- These types are related to poverty, pollution, noise, and natural disasters. Basically anything having to do with the region in which you live.
    • Thinking Stressors- These are the way you perceive a situation or how it affects you and the people and world around you.
    • Behavioral Stressors- Such as negative reactions in the body and mind caused by using tobacco, alcohol, other contraband ie. drugs, or lack of physical activity.
    • Life Situation Stressor- Such as the death of a pet, the separation or divorce of parents, or having trouble in relationships with peers, or receiving the ban hammer on Sythe.

    Physical Effects of Stress
Stress can lead to something we call psychosomatic response. This is a physical reaction that results from stress rather than from injury or illness. This is something that is easily experienced at some point by many teenagers.
    • Headaches- Any headache which is caused by stress is the most common type of headache according to scholars.
    • Asthma- For some people, stress can trigger an asthma attack. During an asthma attack the bronchiols or the tubes which carry air become constricted. If you do have asthma, you should find out what triggers your asthma and avoid that particular occurrence.
    • High Blood Pressure- Prolonged stress can cause increases in the level of cholesterol in one's body. This substance is a fatty one, which can clog arteries which can lead to death or heart disease and/or multiple strokes.

    Mental/Emotional Effects of Stress
    • Mood Swings- Feeling great one moment and feeling horrible the next is a warning sign or common effect of stress. Some teens may experience mood swings as a sign of hormonal increase. These mood swings can put a strain on relationships with family and friends.
    • Substance Abuse- Stress has been proven to increase one's vulnerability to drug usage. Most people who are polled say that stress was their reason for drug/alcohol abuse. However, as some may say smoking or drinking can relieve stress, it's actually proven to cause greater problems.

Ways to Manage Stress: In certain situations you can manage stress by the way which you perceive a situation. You might be able to get a new perspective on stress is you can view stressful situations as learning experience rather than a threat.
Plan Ahead: When planning ahead you are choosing in advance what your goal is and what steps you will take. Thinking all the way through a situation can help this way you are prepared for anything which the future can throw at you. Basically you will be better prepared for unexpected challenges.
    Example:
Get Adequate Sleep:When you don't sleep enough it can easily affect the level of concentration which you will have throughout the day. When you don't sleep this can interfere with school work, athletics and even your relationships which you have previously formulated. The perfect amount of sleep would be eight to nine hours of sleep a day and this will prepare you for the everyday challenges which you will face.
    Example:
Get Regular Physical Activity: Working out or participating in any physical activity is highly important. When you are under stress your body has an excess of nervous energy. Engaging in physical activity can lead to the release of this built up stress.
Eat Nutritious Foods: Balancing your nutrition is important for your overall health and even with your stress management. Poor formats of eating can lead to stress, fatigue, weakness and a highly reduced ability to concentrate. Too much stress can cause poor absorption of vitamins and minerals which in turn leads to deficiencies in your diet. You should be eating a variety of different foods, drinking plenty of water, and by eating fresh food whenever possible.
    • Eat regular meals, don't sit there and snack all day because most snacks don't usually have proper nutrition values.
    • Limit your comfort foods because brownies and cookies aren't good for you. A good way, rather than eating ice cream, to relieve stress from a situation is to workout.
    • Limit the amount of caffeine you take in because it causes a rise in blood pressure.

Stress Management Techniques: These are skills that help and individual handle stress in a healthy, effective way.
    • Redirect Your Energy: As stated before the best way, I find, to redirect your energy is by working out. When you workout you release endorphins which can be the cause of some particular types of stress. Other ways to redirect stress are by reading or doing some type of extra curricular activity.

    • Relax and Laugh: There's no better medicine than a good laugh. If you kick back and take a nap or watch some TV you can effectively displace your stress which can actually be a highly important factor in stress management.

    • Stay Positive: Don't look at the negative side of things. You should think that if your staying positive things can only turnout in a positive fashion. If you get a bad grade on a test don't see it as your downfall, but see it as your chance to gradually do better.
    • Get Support: Getting support is very important. You can get support from almost anyone, it's that simple. You can easily contact your guidance counselor who can easily help you deal with stressful or unfortunate situations. Another important aspect of this would be to let out everything that's bothering you, it can make you feel one hundred times better than you previously felt. The best people you can talk to is your family. They are always there for you and most of the time, provide the best solutions. Remember that if something is bothering you, you should confront the situation such as a co-worker who is verbally abusive.

    • Express Thoughts: You can express your thoughts to anyone. Expressing thoughts is a very useful tactic because you can receive feedback on a situation. Feedback can come in positive and negative forms. Negative feedback would be considered constructive criticism. You should take it in a positive way a learn how to encorperate it into your everyday life styles.

Lol, I mean, I'm not going to sit there and elaborate on masturbation, but I'm sure it does reduce stress.
