Boring programming forum - let's do something about it!

yeah I thought of the deadline too, it's probably too short... but why not set it to like 2 weeks and then if someone request it longer then depending on how many people that think it is too short we just make it longer...

and maybe we should have like 3 levels or something, so one competition with a simple program to make where beginners can start, and then if they feel ready for a little more complicated task then they just try level 2 and so on... and of course really experienced programmers can't compete in the level 1 competition...

and if someone don't feel like writing a tutorial cause you maybe don't have the time, you can just post a program with the source code so others can read and learn from it... cause it's always good to read others source code and check their solutions for a problem and so on...

 

Levels would be nice........ The programs should not be huge and take forever to make... They should be small but complicated... Things that make you think about how to do it.....

 

yes, exactly. Problematic but not that hard so that it is boring because they come nowhere...

 

Wow, a serious debate is happening here

^ Agreed, everyone has different levels of knowledge when it comes to programming (different methods, etc), it would be interesting to see everyone's different ways of scripting. How would we go about judging though? How well it has been written? How effective the perfomance is?
How professional and user friendly such software is? etc...

It would be alot more difficult to judge, as there are many more variables we have to look at then SOTW, look at image, which one you like best.

Although, having POTW, would encourage alot more people to become active and participate. I wouldn't mind entering, to gain alot more knowledge and comments from the Sythe's best programmers

 

first of, scripting != programming...

regarding the judging we would probably judge by efficiency, unnecessary code , maybe structuring (at least for the higher levels) maybe not for level 1, so level 1's can focus on the coding, and maybe the design of the app and so on...

^ Ya, I agree with you. Who will be the person to determine the level the person is at? What is the highest level?
This needs to be set out alot better, but we are still requiring active people in this forum :/

well, depending on witch language, but there are a a lot of good programmers here but I don't know the names of them all but Swan, You, Flaming Idiots, Jazz, Cp, x⁹ are names that comes to my mind (and I can do it too) and i'm sorry for those I left out I'm sure there are a lot of more peoples that are good..
anyway, we could then vote for the one that we think is best so that not one guy must do all the work judging all the programs..

 

Wow this sounds amazing actually. I like to program I've been learning java for awhile. Just took a class on c++ and now teaching myself visual basic. I think this would motivate me more and others. Possibly get more people active in this section.

 

What you guys could do for judging is after the contest is finished, post the sources and people could view them and all vote for the best.

i'd write some guides for C/C++ (now my main choice of language for generally anything) but I'm busy with school as is, and I seldom have free time to do this stuff in (mainly due to me playing games etc xD).

trust me, there are many different ways to go about this.
It's way more difficult then it looks on the surface to get a good speed, especially if you make it save to an output file.

 

The speed of it would vary greatly depending on what language you used....
