1. Intro.
In this guide I will be teaching you how to properly catch trout out of a pond. I have used these methods to win 3 trout tourneys in the past 5 years. Catching trout is a great activity to do with family and friends. It is relaxing and an enjoyable experience alike.This is not for catching trout in rivers, It is for ponds/lakes only.

2.Choosing a Rod
First you need to choose what kind of fishing rod you are going to use. I am mentioning 2 that I have experience with.

First of all you need to choose a good rod. You can use a smaller rod such as a micro lite. Micro lites are good for trout, but are not as strong and take a bit more skill than a heavier rod such as an Ugly Stick. Heavier rods are easier to catch trout with, When I go to tournaments I take both.

Lighter rods use lighter fishing line, so the fish are less likely to see the line. Also you can get a better feel if a fish is nibbling your bait.

Heavier rods use heavier line so trout are less likely to bite due to the line, But it is easier to reel the fish in with a rod like this.

If you are a novice I would go for a heavier rod, but if you are at an intermediate level it might be worth a shot at trying a lighter rod.

Here is an example of an Ugly Stick, A specific brand of heavier rod.


And now an example of a lighter rod, A Micro Lite

No matter which rod you choose I strongly suggest you use fishing line with a 4-6 pound strength. The weaker the line the more likely the fish will bite, so choose what will be easiest for you depending on your experience level.

3.Tying a proper knot

To guarantee your line stays attached to your lure or crappie rig you much tie a good knot. You should also have newly strung line, because old line has a tendency to be curly(which fish can see) and easy to snap.

4.Choosing your Setup


I will show you two methods to catch trout, I recommend if you have 2 rods to have both rods set up differently. This is because if the trout wont bite one setup you have a backup method.

Each Method has its own advantages and disadvantages so I recommend you read both, and choose which is best for you

4.Using a lure
This is a good method to catch trout, but you need to be paying attention the whole time. I recommend you use a small Bluefox lure, but that is just the brand I like. The lure you pick should be pretty small as trout have tiny mouths, and be a bright color with a reflector.

The lure should look something like this...

You should cast out into the water, and wait about 3 seconds for the lure to sink a bit. Then slowly start reeling in, and jerk it slightly to simulate the action of another fish. Once you've reeled it in all the way clean off any sea weed or leaves and cast back out. This method usually gets me some good catches, but it depends on the fish that day.

If you don't have much luck with that, you can try the next method


5. Using a crappie rig with power bait


You can find crappie rigs sometimes called other names, but they all are essentially the same thing

First you need to attach the rig to the line using the previous knot I showed you. Then you need to add 2 small balls of power bait to each hook. Power Bait can be purchased at most tackle stores and you can buy it flavored for trout. You want a ball just enough to cover the hook, but if it is too big the trout could take it off without getting caught on the hook.


You also need to attach a sinker to the end of rig so it sinks to the bottom.



Now you should cast the rig out and let it sink to the bottom completely. Do not move it around much one it has reached the bottom. keep all slack out of the line so you can when the line moves. As soon as you see it move you should jerk it to try to set the hook. Hopefully this will land you a good sized trout.


6.Location Location!
Location is very very important to catching trout.
Trout are attracted to running water because they come from streams. Try and pick a location near a drain in the water or by a fountain. If neither of those spots are available, try and get to the place where they were released. For the first couple of days they will likely be around that area.





7.Catching the big one!
Once you have that trout on your lure or rig don't panic! Do not try to pull that trout in at once, odds are you'll break the line because trout are vicious fighters! The trick to getting trouts in is to have your slack set pretty low, so they wont break your line. Just let them go out and then reel them back in. Eventually they will be so tired out you can get them to the shore.
I also cannot stress this point enough, I have lost many fish because I did not have a net. You should have a good fishing net like this one...

really good guide.. i myself go fishing sometimes but course fishing for things such as carp. I have however used an ugly stick boat fishing in the sea for ********..great experience..10/10.

I recommend you look online, there are usually ponds stocked with trout in the spring time.>_<

 

Not a very good guide I assume you havn't gone fishing much. Powerbait is garbage, its main use is to get rednecks high. leeches are one of the best bait for catching both trout and bass

 

I have had much success with the methods I listed here^_^ . I could really care less if you think I dont know how to fish. Power bait is good because it floats and gives off an attractive smell to fish. It also has a bright color that attracts fish.

 

cuz you know trout love purple stuff that smells like rubber. I spent a year in fort frances fishing, try some flies.

 

Actually they do like bright colors, hence why most lures are bright greens and pinks.

nuff said. my uncle makes flies for a living. The only thing right on your thread is the fact that you should use a net, but that one isn't nearly deep enough.

The weight of the rod is not relevent to how strong it is.

I don't want to catch speckled trout the size of envelops, especially when they're carrying eggs.

 

Okay I'm done arguing with you, The methods I've shown in this thread have worked well for me. And I'm not here to argue with you about flies, I didn't mention them because I don't have experience with flies. Now stop dissing my guide and methods, GTFO my thread:nuts:
