[Approved] Mandatory UID identification practice

First time posting a suggestion so I'll get right to it. Despite there being a pinned post about how to obtain discord UID on almost every sub-forum and thread on the site, I still see loads of people scammed by imposters each week for tons of GP. Thinking of a way to force people to be more aware of safe practices and this is what I came up with:

Along with having to verify yourself to join the sythe discord we should require new users to grab the UID of the shinbot verification bot, or of some bot and submit it into a form(similar to the current auth code submission) to be allowed into the discord.

This ensures they not only know their own UID but know how to get the UID of another discord user. While it isn't our responsibility to safe proof trading or to prevent idiots from getting scammed, it benefits the entire community if less people are scammed because more people make legitimate purchases and are repeat traders.

If you guys think this is a decent idea, please contribute your thoughts because I think we could do something similar and make an automated process like this required before posting a thread on the site, because many people simply don't use the discord server, only the website, and then go and get scammed by a discord user.

 

Adding to your UID Mandatory id practice, is it possible to have an open communication with Discord Support team? Where a representative from Sythe.org reports any fake discord users so Discord can take any legal actions?

@Biz Biz I think that's a good idea but depends entirely on discord supports willingness to help us and their responsiveness. Also hard to automate this so could be a lot of work for whoever from sythe would be responsible. There are tons of scammers rip

 

I like this idea a lot, the only problem is that discord isn't the only platform people trade on. Skype, although I find it very outdated and useless, is still used by some Sythe users. I think this would help some scams, but I'm also going to play devil's advocate for a second. Many people who trade on Sythe also aren't in the Sythe discord, therefore this process doesn't help them. And I'd bet that the people who make impostor scam reports are new/uninformed, so they may also not be in the Sythe discord. Can you think of any ideas outside of the stickies that already exist that would help cover non-discord users, and skype users as well? I like this idea, but I don't think it will be as effective as you may think.

 

Well another similar idea I thought of was offering paid protection service for users. Where they pay either via a percent fee or flare rate to have someone oversee the security and validity of all their trades. Would be good for new traders to make use of this until they are experienced. However that isnt really a suggestion for the site so didnt post it here

 

Fair enough, I mean there are middlemen who have rather cheap services and I would suggest them to anyone new, I personally just contact people I've known for a while so ya...

 

Are you suggesting an additional step in the verification process where a user must provide the bot's UID?

I don't think this is necessary because ultimately it shouldn't be the reason users are being scammed. A Sythe PM is required for a report, so if the user was scammed by an imposter it's unlikely a PM was ever sent. It would be better to utilize the bot by sending an informative guide post-verification. Alternatively, trivia questions can be created for best trading practices which is sent randomly in the Sythe Discord every X minutes.

 

This isn't true. A large amount of imposter scams take place with a real PM being sent. AKA, ''man in the middle scam'' - the scammer pretends to be the customer, and has the legitimate trader send the victim a PM, whilst also pretending to be the legitimate trader with the victim.

 

I agree with S here. Some of the man in the middle scams are very sophisticated and well executed. While being scammed like this wont have any recourse via sythe because they wont be linked to a user on sythe because the PM was essentially forged, they still have negative impact on the community. Users checking UID is the main way to prevent this from happening

 

I like the general concept I am going to through in a support.

 

just today looks like another person is scammed 500m via a MIM scam where a PM was sent and checking UID would have saved the victim

 

That's a very good point @Pirate Sadly I feel like many users who trade on Discord don't use the sythe discord maybe there is a way to reconcile that so that more users are in the loop; Regardless I think its a pretty easy automation that doesn't require any time after implementing it(maybe bugfixing it if needed), and if it saves even 2 or 3 people from getting scammed like this I can't see how its wouldn't be worth implementing.

 

I said it's unlikely not impossible. I know it occurs, but not as often as you think. The "legitimate trader" will typically be held responsible for these scams because their PM format sucked.

 

@Shin I think both your ideas about trivia and a post verification guide are good ideas and all 3 of these suggestions could be implemented complimentary to one and other. I also think that you are only focusing on the result of a scam ie the report and who is held responsible or if a report is able to be created based on the scam. If a scam occurs with no PM sent by the imposter and there is no way to enforce a report for the scam via sythe that doesn't mean the scam didn't occur. This type of scam would be preventable if the users had more training and this would hopefully result in only the more enforceable scams ending up in the report a scammer section. Which would save all the mods time and increase efficiency of dealing with enforceable scam reports
