But seriously, it takes a couple of seconds to do this and here are some pro's:

-Give context to rules. If a rule is unclear to a user, he can read up on it more easily. If there is a dispute and a rule is being called upon, more context may be decisive. Sometimes a rule was designed for exactly some specific scenarios.
-Avoid debates repeating themselves; all arguments are out there already and you can read up on them
-Some very smart members come and go. What they leave behind are clever arguments for certain rules that most of us miss. It would be a shame for these contributions to fade.
-Spot outdated rules

I understand it's not a fun job to do this, but it doesn't necessarily have to be done retroactively.

 

This would cause clutter to the rules thread and we don't make many major rule changes, if we do they are displayed in the news announcement section.
