Yes we do, it's just a form of community survival instead. See, when our ancestors came down from the trees and lived on the African Savannah they realized a very important fact. A lot of things that lived on the land were much bigger, stronger, and faster than humans. So that left humans with two options, find a way to survive and die. To expand on what our ancestors obviously did, we survived through intelligence instead of strength, and one of these things was to stick together, and form communities/roles.

Medication although can alleviate symptoms of genetic diseases we cannot cure them. (To the best of my knowledge, any 'cure' is just a permanent inhibition of the symptoms.) That being said, genetic engineering technology is seemingly close to being a modern thing, and is already used on other species.

Insulin for example, is produced by genetic engineering (I'll post specifics if someone wants)
