Some people argue that alcoholism is a disease; what are your thoughts?

Personally I believe that saying alcoholism is a disease is just like saying a meth addiction is a disease, or a nicotine addiction is a disease.

Alcoholism, as a disease, is just a justification that people use for substance abuse. Shit, some people have dodged jail time because they claimed they were alcoholics.

A disease by definition is caused by some sort of pathogen.

Can alcohol really be considered a pathogen?

    Yes.

You can die from drinking it, and it can infect your liver.

Infections aren't always caused by pathogens, and you don't always die from getting infected with a pathogen.

I don't get what you're trying to say.

The way the alcohol affects your liver isn't at all the same way a disease affects you. Alcohol is actually physically harming your liver by overworking it.

Besides, liver disease isn't what the disease is about, it's about being addicted to alcohol.

    I don't think it is a disease..Personally.
I think it is pretty much a bad habit, or addiction

The alcoholism disease is based on the definition of a disease.

    *Tolerance
    *Curable
    *Recovery
    etc, etc.

Okay, to put this out there, you don't catch alcoholism you decide to start drinking.

it is your choice to start which leads on to what ever.

It is pure coincidence that alcohol addiction might have the some of the same effects as a disease, but it is NOT A DISEASE.

It is an addiction, just like any other.

Alcoholism isn't hereditary, it is learned. If alcoholism was hereditary, we would all be alcoholics. Think about it, does/did someone in your family suffer from alcohol addiction? Now, think of their children, and their children, and their children and so on. Are any of them alcoholics? And if so, where does the chain break? What makes that person exempt from the 'disease?'

You see, alcoholism as a disease has no logical explanation, especially if you take heredity into consideration.

No, you cannont catch cancer and many other diseases, diseases are a large sectrum of things.

    Definition of disease-
"an impairment of health or a condition of abnormal functioning"

In my opinion Im not completely sure but I guess it is a mental disease.

Alcoholism is a choice, not a disease. The idea of it being a disease has done so much harm - it strips users of responsibility and makes them feel like they are victims.

Alcoholism is NOT hereditary. If you have a family full of drunks it's because they MADE a choice to become alcoholics.

Actually there has been studies showing that there may be a gene for alchoholism.

There are genes for far wierder things then alchoholism.

It is not a disease at all, here in America they're beginning to say that almost everything is a disease and people aren't getting in as much trouble for certain things anymore because they can say a disease caused it.

It's really quite dumb and ignorant to call something like alcoholism a disease. Diseases are caused by harmful microorganisms, not chemicals you choose to take.

I think some people are much more vulnerable to it due to life situations, but fuck no it shouldn't be a disease! If you drink and do something stupid, it's your fault for drinking. There's a bunch of clinics out there who actually work, people just drink too much and lose motivation.
