Well for all they know, he could of had a gun as well. Even if he had a gun with him, he would've used to knife to hurt her more. But yeah if i saw someone cutting off another persons head, i'd be a bit hesitant in risking my life for someone who's already dead.

I don't think anyone would really know what they'd do until they are in that situation.
