Guide to becoming a maxed tank.

Becoming a maxed tank is probably one of the hardest combat related goals you can reach. Over time, I have noted key points that have helped ME along the way.

    • Commitment
      Motivation
      Determination
      Concentration
      Preparation
      Planning/Training
      Variety
      Vacation
      Anti-socialization

The guide will make specific in-depth references to the above points, in listed order.

    Commitment
Before even thinking about becoming a maxed tank, ask yourself if you are willing to go through with it. The time spent on this task can range anywhere from 7 months to 3 years. After you have decided you are sure, pump yourself up. Get motivated.

    Motivation
Get ready for what you are about to start doing, this should work like a pep rally. Just get pumped and ready to go.

    Certain things I did:

    • Make goal signatures
      Post "journals" on forums
Make a creative name pertaining to defence or invincibility, etc.
Tell your RuneScape friends about your goal
Put on some of your favorite motivation music throughout training

    Determination
One key point is to abandon all other RuneScape skills, tasks, etc.
If you have a main account, abandon it. Don't even think about logging in to it. Distraction is the first step in giving up. If you are easily distracted, you will need to learn how to concentrate on the task at hand.

    Concentration
If you are easily distracted by public chat/private chat/clan chat: TURN THEM OFF.
I'm not saying to completely abandon all of your friends, but if you find yourself typing more than training, you are getting distracted. If you firmly believe that having a life is more important than RuneScape: DON'T EVEN TRY TO BE A MAXED TANK. As stupid/lame as I sound, anti-socialization is necessary in becoming a maxed tank. Certain steps I took in being concentrated:

    • Close all other windows on the computer
Set short term goals, IE "I'll have 82 range within 30 minutes if I don't I suck at life"
Race your friends, challenge them to get a certain stat before you get a certain stat. Competition drives success.
Get your ass beat. Do a combat minigame until you have been completely annihilated. Beat yourself up for sucking so badly and be motivated to train more. (Just don't get too distracted playing games..)
If you are near a TV and you aren't "AFKing (methods explained later..)", turn it off.
If you are in a room with doors, close them

    Preparation
The best way to stay on task is to set a small amount of reachable goals. Plan out what you need to do then conquer each item one at a time. Jumping around a lot can turn out to be very distracting, try to stay away from that. Some things I did:

    • Write all the quests/quest requirements you need.
Because most good RuneScape gear/places are linked to quests, this should be a first step. Keep the list organized into 2 basic categories, stats and quests. The stat requirements for the quests should initially be low, so tackle them first. Complete each stat requirement one at a time, IE if you need 55 Fishing and 40 Cooking, Fish until 55, banking all the fish, THEN cook them. After you have all the stat requirements, start doing the quests. Obviously you should do the "requirement" quests first, then move on to the bigger quests. As drawn out as this sounds, if you stay on task you should be done questing within 1-2 months.
Try to plan out how you will train each skill.
There are many skill guides on RuneScape fansites. Use these as a general outline.
      Gear up
By now you should have many basic quests and level requirements achieved. Through questing you should have unlocked good armor (Rune-Barrows gloves, D Scim). Do other minigames to get other good gear as well. Get armor such as range void and a fighter torso. These will be very beneficial to you.

    Planning/Training
Now that you have unlocked most places, armor, and other things, you should start training. I took these steps as a general guideline:

    Make a guideline!
What do you want to train first? Remember you should stick to ONE main skill at a time. There are a few skills you should be thinking about-
60-70 Attack - If you know you won't pest control, I recommend getting 70 Attack.
60-70 Strength - If you know you won't pest control, I recommend getting 70 Strength.
99 Defence - Getting 99 Defence WILL be frustrating. Plan it well.
55-99 Magic - 99 Magic is a necessity of a maxed tank. I recommend initially getting at least 55 Magic for basic spells if you haven't already.
99 Range - This skill will most likely be the easiest 99. Plan it accordingly.
99 Hitpoints - Instead of asking when you want to train this: I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU TRAIN THIS LAST (or second to). The remainder SHOULD be trained in pest control.
99 Prayer - If you really want to fuck up your account, training prayer will be like training hitpoints, absolutely horrible. You should train this AFTER hitpoints. As this is your last skill, you should have at least 10M saved up.

I trained my stats in this order:
Attack/Strength, Range/Defence, Magic, Hitpoints. I didn't want greater then 60 prayer, since it really isn't necessary, tanks can use prayer pots just like anyone else.

    CHOOSE YOUR ORDER WISELY
I coupled Attack and Strength because they are dependent of each other. I kept both stats within 5 levels of each other.

I coupled Defence and Range next. Basically, one week I would focus on Range then the next week I would focus on Defence. I suggest doing this in order to not burn yourself out on one skill.

I DON'T RECOMMEND COUPLING MAGIC. Magic is a very demanding skill which takes supplies, money, and a lot of time. It is very distracting.

After I got 99 range and 99 defence, I moved on to Magic because I knew it would come before Hitpoints.

From there I moved onto Hitpoints, then I felt that my account was complete.

    Training Methods
    Attack/Strength/Defence

    Items:
The best possible Strength bonus you can get without sacrificing too much defence, good food (monkfish are great), and plenty of supplies to stay in one place for as long as possible.

    Method:
Use the best gear you can use. If you are in a place where you won't need Defence bonus (Ape Atoll monkeys), sacrifice all defence for prayer and strength bonus. For Defence, Use at least the items shown:

    Locations:
There are plenty of locations to train. A few notable areas are:
    - Stronghold of security, all floors. Requires good defence and decent food. Recommended is amulet of glory to teleport to edgeville, grab food, and run back. Note: this area is good to train in when you are sick of clicking and paying attention. Sit back and watch TV as you AFK.
    - Chaos tunnels, alot of great places to train here. Beware of a chance of teleporting to high level monsters or many medium level monsters. There are many places to train with minimal defence/food. Recommended: look at a map on a fansite and plan out where you want to go. Note: this area requires alot of attention and clicking. Train here when you don't feel like AFKing.
    - Bandits, this is a good place to train, although very occupied. Find a good world, bring plenty of good supplies as this is meant as a high level training method. Note: this area is good to train in when you are sick of clicking and paying attention. Sit back and watch TV as you AFK.

    Range
Training range without pest controlling or chinning really isn't that hard. There are a lot of good places to train as well.

    Items:
Ava's Attractor/Accumulator is absolutely required while training range. It will be your best friend.
Full void is recommended when there are safespots. It makes you hit at least 3 higher than normal, which adds up fast.
If you are tank ranging, [an archer helm, dragon legs/skirt, Dhide body, Dboots, highest RFD gloves/combat/regen brace, and at least glory] should do fine.
If you can't get the above items, find a safespot and max out your range bonus.
Bolts- If you don't have 55 slayer I recommend getting it and using broad bolts, easy to buy, cheap, and still hit hard.
Magic Shortbow - These are pretty obsolete. If you are using one..seriously..don't.

    Methods:
Take alot of supplies into the training area and use them for as long as you can without leaving. This encourages you to train. If you have lower defence (60-), try to stay away from tank ranging.

    Locations:
    - Black dragons in evil chicken lair (RFD). Great place to train if you need money. Its not the fastest, but it is very steady money/experience and there isn't much of a fight to get a dragon (or two) all to yourself. [SAFESPOTS]
    - Green dragons in chaos tunnels. Another great place for money. It isn't steady, and there are alot of people that go there. [NO SAFESPOTS]
    - Fire giants/moss giants/spiders in chaos tunnels. Fire giants are an OKAY source of money, not steady and minimal safespotting, but it is possible; moss giants are very easy to kill in void, provide fast steady exp, but supply a very small amount of money; spiders are very easy to 2-hit in void, have no drop at all, but no one ever goes there. If used right, it is a very beneficial place to train.
    - Chinning can be done in many places, but it's a pathetic excuse for training and wastes a lot of money that you could have MADE instead od SPENT.
    - Aviansies are mediocre range training. Don't let anyone fool you, they are much worse than people make them sound. They are crowded, require a lot of skilled tanking (or $$ for prayer potions) and sometimes rarely drop as much as you hope.

    Magic
By now you should have a good amount of money. Be ready to spend alot of it on magic.
    Items:
    a) Pouches, Nature runes, fire staff
    b) Logs, money, astrals, etc.
    c) Nothing

    Methods:
For training magic, I would suggest alching. It is fast but expensive, but there is really no way around spending money. Pouches are great for alching, I can't say specifics but on research you should be able to find a good pouch to alch. BEWARE: PRICES CHANGE A LOT.

If you want to spend EVEN more money, you could use the lunar spell plank make, which requires many items, a lot of banking, and even money.

If you are sick of both methods, pest control provides decent free magic exp if you have a higher magic level (80+).

    Hitpoints/Prayer/Magic
This is where pest control comes in. These skills should be saved for last and you should be 100+ combat by now. Have a high level friend give you the PCE world, pest controlling 3 stats will be very efficient [HP/Prayer/Magic].
Try to stay away from pcing other stats, even if it seems faster the math says it isn't. If you are a total loser you can easily acquire PCE worlds from the #rs channel on SwiftIRC (SwiftKit).

    My general rule of training
Contrary to popular belief, the amount/level of the creature you train on has no (or even a negative) effect on your training. The rate at which you get expirience depends on only 2 crucial factors:
    How high you hit
You should always try to max the offensive bonuses of whatever skill you are training. Armor, pots, summoning, even prayer if you want. MAX YOUR BONUSES AND HIT HARD. My method for strength training was using a dragon battleaxe combined with regular attack potions. This method is very cheap and very effective. At 70 Strength, I went from hitting 21 to hitting 26. The 5 extra damage adds up to an insane amount of exp.

    How fast you deal damage
Always try to keep your time between the death of something and attacking something else minimal. The amount of HP the monster has doesn't matter. This may be kind of confusing but listen to my explanation:

Say you are at Expiriments with 1 other person. You have time to kill two of them then wait for them to respawn (say about 20 seconds), then resume killing them. This comes out to about 150 damage per minute.

I, on the other hand, go to low level spiders in the Chaos Tunnels. There is no one there, and the area is multicombat. I power kill spiders, which have only 35-37 HP. But since this is a multicombat area, and there are plenty of spiders to attack, I NEVER stop attacking. This means that I am always dealing a continuous amount of damage. If I go on a 2 hitting spree, I can deal up to 210-222 damage per minute. This method is about 65% more efficient than the previous method.

    Variety
If you become bored or even on the verge of giving up; DON'T. Temporarily move on to a different goal or activity. But as soon as you feel comfortable, go right back to training. Most failed RS accounts result from people burning themselves out on one task or becoming too distracted with another. Use my coupling methods, they are lifesaving techniques. Remember, train [Defence/Attack/Range] or [Range/Defence] Alternate when you start getting burnt out or frustrated.

    Vacation
If you know you absolutely cannot handle any more forms of training, go test out your tank skills at minigames. Go PK, play castlewars, clan wars, stealing creation. Anything. Most likely you'll get sick of dying and go back to training. This method always works because no matter how good you are you'll always meet someone better (or luckier).

    Anti-socialization
Becoming a tank isn't the best way to make friends. I know I lost a lot of friends while becoming a maxed tank. It requires so much time and dedication that some of your impatient friends will become irritated at your dedication. Becoming a tank helped me figure out who my true friends were :).

    Completion
The best feeling int the world. Reaching your goal. Having all the time you spent paid off. Recognition is a nice bonus. People remember you for your stats and how you are in combat. A lot of people will comment you on your stats. You can finally post the goal signatures that you made earlier. 100%.

Very Nice guide,Some pictures of the places where you could train and possible xp per hour would help a lot of people out. However I do know that you are trying to point out to everyone wanting to make a tank that it is a long and hard process. Nice guide and awesome as account. I am doing the same right now however making a burrows ranger.

    no..

I suggest reading a little better next time you "offer" criticism.

Guys I can't add too many pictures because basically I have sold everything I had and I no longer have RuneScape members. If I add any more pictures they will be from fansites.
