To the people who clicked this with expectations, sorry to disappoint but this is a serious discussion thread.

How do people feel about this? It comes into force in 5 days in the UK, apparently:

    http://www.justice.gov.uk/docs/circular-criminal-justice-01-2009.pdf

I think the scope of this legislation is far too wide. Instead of targeting pedophiles and violent sexual deviants, it essentially criminalizes people for having drawn/seen something completely ficticious. It is a disgraceful throwback to not too long ago when the stuff that millions of people now routinely view was illegal. It's legislation made to fit by the morality police, a maleficient realization of middle-class moral totaliarianism which doesn't belong (and isn't welcome if the opinions of the students on TSR is any indication) in the 21st century.

The idea that it's legal to have some nasty BDSM with a 16 year old girl, but not to draw pictures of a ficticious one doing the same stuff really jars with me. It is this absurdity coupled with the fact that this legislation is helping nobody that pisses me off. If the material is ficticious (be it in written word, image etc) then no one is having their rights infringed upon. By definition this is a victimless crime, and should not be made illegal!

Discuss, I'm sure this will be relevant to many of you :)

NOTE: The .pdf doesn't explicitly refer to 'drawn' images, unless I missed a bit by mistake. "Image" seems to be defined as one that may be drawn though here, and all the ranting on sites like The Register and forums refer to drawn images being criminalized. Correct me if I'm wrong.

How are they going to judge that objectively?

Fascists. Why do they care what people look at in the privacy of their own homes?

Exactly, although personally I am bothered by the idea of people being allowed to view pornography if the viewing drives an industry in which children or adults are unwillingly abused. Would that bother you, Shredder?

Anyway, back to the actual legislation, these are the key words:

It doesn't have to be real. It's a case of the morality police making the law, pure and simple.

    Interesting.

Also you might want to edit that link into your origional post.

    I found this funny

An “extreme pornographic image” is an image which is both—
    (a) pornographic, and
    (b) an extreme image.

But altogether porn is... never going to stop. If it becomes Illegal people will be viewing it illegally. It is a circle which will never end.
