Survival instinct - we're attracted to the opposite sex because our hormones tells us that we are capable of reproducing, and reproduction is the key to ensure the survival of our specie. Basically, it's all instinctive behaviours, much like when our stomachs informs us that we're hungry.

So no one thing makes us attract, its a bunch of things, mixed together with the natural course of reproduction, that make us attract.

Its sort of instinct, look at the animals, all they do is eat, sleep, and make babies. They have been doing that for a long time. It's probably because of the fact that they (opposite sex) are the key to reproduction.

This is not necessarily what attracts the opposite sex, this could attract the same sex, beyond that this could just cause someone to want to be around you (a friend).

The answer is hormones. Like emotion it is caused by things inside your body. A good example for something similar to this is guilt. When people claim "they feel bad about something"-It is actually a b-12 deficiency in your body. Essentially emotion, attraction etc. are all produced by various functions of your body.

Interesting how everyone is a lot of people are saying looks and personality; this is entirely not the case. Its only recently that those became a factor. We are attracted to the opposite sex because of hormones. Only recently did parts of the body become taboo as well; things like nipples etc. were just considered other parts of the body that served functions to do with the infantile stage of a child's maturing cycles. From a scientific perspective, hormones cause attraction to the opposite sex and homosexuals are "anomalies." This anomaly is naturally occurring in almost every species though.

Recently (last two thousand years or so) looks have become a factor (wealth was always a factor, even if it was measured in livestock etc.), and very recently personal characteristics have become important. Basically it details the evolution of us from a species to sentient and feeling creatures. Kind of interesting, but then again the last thing that's on my mind with my girlfriend is how much livestock she has or I was attracted to her because of hormones
