Iraq veterans, the new 'Nam vets?

Well, I just feel like for some reason history is repeating itself. Guerilla warfare waged upon US army soldiers, and US Marines. Them not really supposed to be there, but are. The rest of the world, and the country against them being there but being Marines or army soldiers they are there. They're going crazy, homesick , scared, morale must be low. They're seeing friends die, they're seeing people they've known for a long time, or a week die.

Does anyone see the similarities between them and the Vietnam vets? They too have seen things, not sure if i would even want to say which one of the two is worse. But don't you think it'd make sense to understand how to make it so Iraq vets don't become the latest generation of Vietnam veterans? All I really want to say is....should the US do more research on PTSD if they haven't already? Pardon my ignorance if you think I don't know what I'm saying, but if you DO KNOW what you're talking about please share.

Would you support a study on PTSD and other combat related illnesses? Do you think we should have it here? Just to protect these Soldiers, these Marines, these Airmen, these Sailors from their ultimate enemy from the battlefield? These are my questions, and please add some stuff you think need recognition. Like if you know a vet, share what they're like now. And if you agree that we should make these vets go to shrinks after to help them out, if this isn't already done.

Again, I'll say it. I don't want to see these people that have gone into war to become the old men that future generations will call crazy. I don't want that to happen to my future Marine brothers, and to all the other servicemen.

    Here's a link to a youtube video.

This ones kinda old but...yea. I read it, and it made me tear up. How much can Marines take, how far can you push them before they do become "crazy"?

Marines can handle war easily- I'm sure.

But I believe Iraq Veterans are going to be like the 'Nam Vets, but atleast with a tad bit more respect.. considering 9/11.

Why were Vietnam vets not as respected? I respect all soldiers, of any war, from any country. I respect them more than that big bussniessman or whatever. I respect soldiers more than I'd respect the president, any political official. If an cop told me to do something that i did not want to do, i wouldn't do it. if a soldier told me to, I'd kill a man coldblooded.

The soldiers are respected for what war they're fighting in, not what they are.

We basically went into Vietnam and started fighting someone else's war.

If we were OBVIOUSLY attacked first in the Vietnam situation, I'm sure they would be alot more respected.

A good man, a future Marine brother. I'm joining the Corps myself, but since my niece's dad is not going to be here for my niece(he's joining, going at the 12th) I'll have to be here. But I'll follow his path, 4 years of college and be an officer!

    That's a good plan...

Just hope your men don't hate you; by doing that.. it's like saying "I'm better than you.." etc.

Go through JROTC if you haven't already.. it''s an instant promotion from E-1 to E-3 if you join enlisted.

That's the problem tho, I'm going to join against the will of my mom. If I join anything to do with the military she will freak out. So I can not do that. Altho, when I turn 18 I'm joining th reserves, if that's a good idea.

When Vietnam soldiers returned to the US, some gravely wounded, they were met by screaming protesters. Some soldiers were spit on and called murderers for fighting a war they themselves generally didn't approve of.

The war in Iraq is being fought my volunteers. There isn't a draft in place, and I doubt one will come for this specific war. Some of the traits you mentioned occur in every war. Look at WW2: flame throwers, gas, trench warfare, etc.

Should we increase our efforts with PTSD? Of course. In fact, the US Government is already taking the appropriate steps.
