Jailbreaking your iPod Touch / iPhone

This is my guide for Analog's guide contest. This guide will help you jailbreak your iPod touch / iPhone, and show you some helpful applications that you can install after jailbreaking, from changing your theme to getting free applications!

Jailbreaking
Before you can jailbreak your iPod touch or iPhone, you need to know what firmware (version) it is on. You will need to be at firmware 2.2 to jailbreak with my guide.
You can find this by going into Settings -> General -> About.

If you are not at the 2.2 firmware, you will need to download it and upgrade your iPod touch or iPhone. You can download here, according to your device:

Here's how to upgrade with your downloaded firmware:

1. Download the firmware required.
2. Open up iTunes, make sure your device is plugged in.
3. Hold down the SHIFT key, and press Update.
4. Locate your downloaded firmware, and open it.
5. Your iPod touch or iPhone will then update.

Now that you've upgraded to 2.2 firmware, you need to download QuickPwn, the program that will jailbreak your iPod touch or iPhone. You can download here, according to your firmware and OS:

After you have downloaded QuickPwn, plug in your iPod touch or iPhone and power it down all the way. Open up QuickPwn. Locate your firmware when prompted to.

You will be asked if you want:

• Cydia
• Installer
• Pineapple boot logo

It is of your best interest to select both Cydia and Installer. The pineapple boot logo is simply when you start your iPod touch or iPhone up, instead of the apple logo, there will be a pineapple. This one is completely optional, and not required in my guide.

You will then have to follow a set of instructions which involve holding the Power and Home buttons. Try to do exactly what QuickPwn says. If you make a mistake, don't worry, you can just exit QuickPwn and try again.

Congratulations! Your iPod touch or iPhone should power up. You will notice two new applications, Cydia and Installer, which you had previously selected.

The next part of this guide are not required, just helpful things you can now do that your iPod touch or iPhone is jailbroken.

Cydia
Cydia, in my opinion, is more useful then Installer. With Cydia, you can install themes for your iPod touch or iPhone, tweaks such as a 5 icon dock, and can even allow you to control your iPod touch or iPhone from your computer!

There are 5 categories that are on the bottom of Cydia. I will explain these.

Home
Has some useful links for people to use, such as featured packages, frequently asked questions, and some user guides.
Sections
These are the different sections of packages that you can choose from. You can select to view all packages, but be warned, there are a lot!
Changes
This shows you if there are any updated on any packages you have installed. You should update them if there are any.
Manage
You currently have two things you can pick: packages and sources.

Packages shows you what you have installed. You can remove them, or reinstall them if you are having a problem with them. If you find some you have not installed, don't worry about it. They were automatically installed when you jailbroke your iPod touch / iPhone.

A source is a link that has packages for download. You can Google some if you'd like, some have themes, some have games, some have a little bit of everything.

Search
If you have the name of a package you want to install, you can type it in on the search bar at the top. Cydia will bring up a list of packages that match your search.

Installer
Installer is very much like Cydia. It has a lot of things that you can install like themes and games.

Installous
Installous is an extremely useful application that lets you download applications for free. You will download it in Cydia, but you will have to have this source added:

Here are some instructions on how to get a free application.

1. Pick an application you want. In this case we will use The Price is Right.'
2. Open Installous.

3. In the top left corner, touch the Search button and type in the name of the application.
4. Installous will come up with a list of applications that match your search. Select the one that you want.

​

5. There will be the description of the application. Scroll all the way down to the bottom, and select the latest version.

​

6. Installous will have a list of websites you can download the application from. Be sure to select an iPod-friendly link.

​

7. Continue with the download. When you click on the link to download, two buttons will come up, one is Download and the other one is Install. Select download.

​

8. When it has reached 100%, touch the Downloads section on the bottom of the screen.
9. Select the application you downloaded, and press the red Install button.

​

10. When it is finished, go to your home screen. The new application should be there, ready to use! Here are some pictures of applications I have downloaded.

Winterboard
Winterboard is the package that lets you apply the themes you have downloaded. When you download a theme, you can go to your home screen and open up Winterboard. The theme should be listed. You can also have multiple things checked at once.

Bossprefs
Bossprefs helps you manage options on your iPod touch or iPhone. For example, if you don't want to waste the battery, you can turn WiFi off, so it doesn't search for it. You can also turn your mail on and off, along with SSH, Bluetooth, and Edge.

You also have the ability to hide icons. I don't really know why you would, but you sure can. (Tip: Don't hide all of them it crashes your iPod touch or iPhone )

Make it Mine
Make it mine is a simple package from Cydia that allows you to change your carrier and banner texts to whatever you want. Your carrier is on the top left of your screen and your banner is on the top center of your screen. Make sure when you're searching for it in Cydia it's all one word!

SSH
You will need Winterboard for this.
If you don't know what it is, SSH is a convenient tool that lets you change settings in your iPod touch / iPhone directly from your computer. You can change things such as icons, phrases such as 'Slide to Unlock' and much more.

I have made a ZIP file where you can access battery image changes, slide to unlock changes, slide to power off changes, and slide to answer changes.

Now, the Slide to Unlock and other two files are just set to say 'Sythe.org'. If you don't want that, you will need to open the Springboard.strings file with Notepad, and change it to what you want to. Make sure it is still Springboard.strings when you save it.

This part of the guide is for Windows only. You will need a program called WinSCP for your computer. The download link is below.

Once you have downloaded and installed WinSCP, you will have a few things to download for your iPod touch or iPhone. You will need to install Bossprefs and OpenSSH. These can both be found in Cydia, which you should have installed.

When you install those two packages, open up Bossprefs, and turn SSH on.

Now, go to your computer and open up WinSCP. At the top right, click New.
For your host name, you will need to go back on your iPod touch or iPhone. Go to Settings -> Wifi. When you find your wireless network, click on the blue arrow to the right of it. You should see your IP address and some other things. Copy your IP address down, and type it in for your host name.

You then have to enter your user name and password. Regardless of what device you have, your user name and password should be:

User name: Root
Password: Alpine

On the far left side, if it is not already, check Advanced Settings. Click on Connection. For your server response timeout, bring it up to 100 seconds, as it takes a while for the first time that you connect.

Click on section on the top left. Near the bottom, press the Save button, and name it whatever you'd like.

Select the session you just made and press login. Be sure to have your iPod touch / iPhone on and connected to WiFi.

Congratulations! You have successfully SSHed into your iPod touch or iPhone. You can now change a lot of things you couldn't have originally.

If you want to use the packages I have uploaded for you, on the left side of WinSCP, locate the ZIP file you downloaded. On the right side, at the top, click on the first forward slash (/) that you see. This will bring you all the way back to root.

Double click on Library -> Themes. Then drag all of the files from the ZIP file into the folder. Go to Winterboard, and they should be there!

VNC
VNC is used so you can control your iPod touch or iPhone directly from your computer. You will need to download RealVNC on your computer.

Also, on your iPod touch or iPhone you will need to install Veency from Cydia.

Once you install RealVNC on your computer, go to Start -> All Programs -> RealVNC -> RealVNC Viewer 4 -> Run VNC Viewer.

When it opens up, it will ask for a server. You will use the same IP address you used in SSH for a server. To find your IP address, go to Settings -> WiFi. Then click on the blue arrow to the right of your Wifi Connection, and write it down.

Type it in and press 'OK'.

You will then receive a prompt about allowing access to your iPod touch or iPhone. Touch yes. And congratulations! You can now access your device straight from your computer! This is great for typing notes or texts as you can use your own keyboard.

Truly awesome guide. I really wanted to know how to jailbreak my IPhone. But I do have some questions.
1. What negative affects does 'jailbreaking' on your IPhone have?
2. Are there multiple way to 'jailbreak' your IPhone?
3. If so, what are the best ways with the best mods?

 

I like it! I have already jail broken my ipod touch, but I know the troubles I had during the process would have been helped through this guide!

It voids your warranty. You can remove the jailbreak, though, and you should be fine. Another negative is depending on how many mods you have. If you have a lot of mods, it can sometimes have a slow reaction time to a touch or slide.

Yes. One of the most simple that I might edit in is http://www.jailbreakme.com/ . You go to that website in Safari, and you will be asked if you'd like to jailbreak, if you press 'yes' it will automatically jailbreak for you. The only downside is that it only gives you Installer, not Cydia.
You can also use PwnageTool, which is made my the Dev Team. It's almost exactly like QuickPwn, but the Dev Team added some extra features to make it more user-friendly.
The last way I know of is ZiPhone, which I used to jailbreak my iPod touch before I updated to 2.0. This is a quick way to jailbreak, but is known to 'brick' (permanently break) an iPod touch during the process.

QuickPwn is most trustworthy in my opinion. Some essential mods are Winterboard and Installous (in my guide). This lets you get all apps for free and use themes you have downloaded. I am later going to add on to this guide how to make a theme and how to change some thing such as 'Slide to Unlock'.

No, there is not a jailbreak for the iPod touch 2nd generation. The Dev Team is working on one, but they said it will be another few months.

2nd gen works...why don't people understand that all ipod touches/iphones of all models run the same firmware. Just because its in a new case it still runs the exact same firmwares.

 

This is awesome but I spent like 50 bucks+ on apps. Can I still play them with my Pod jailbroken?
