*R4DS* - Revolution for DS - SAVED ME HUNDREDS - [Guide/Informational]

Well anyways, I just bought this really cool little DS cartridge called the <e2> R4DS (Revolution for DS). I honestly had no idea what it was when I bought it, I just liked the cover on the box and had heard from my friends that it was really cool. I picked it up online and started tinkering with it yesterday, sort of an early Christmas present to myself. Little did I know that this $22 (USD) device could actually save me hundreds in the future. And that wasn't even the best part! Now I dont have to pay for wireless internet on my phone anymore. Right about now you're probably as confused and clueless as I was when I first heard about it. Just read on.

The cartridge itsself is basically like a normal DS game that is completely blank and has no data on it with a slot for a Micro SD card (the kind you find in your cell phone) in the top of it. I got this thing thinking "what the hell would anyone want a blank DS game for?" And like I said, I had no idea that if I spent $22 on this thing that I would never have to buy another DS game ever again. Yea, pretty cool huh? And that I could even connect to the internet from any WiFi spot in the country! All on my DS...

The games are called ROMs and I needed to search sites for free downloads of them. Once I found them, just download, then extract, and load onto the Micro SD thats plugged into its USB adapter. Once its loaded on there I can take the Micro SD out and stick it into the R4DS Game cartridge so that it'll fit into my DS. This makes the product fantastic because as long as these sites have the games I want, I'll never have to buy another one ever again. And if I do, its just the ROM for about $2.50 (or FREE) as opposed to $40! The Micro SD card that I bought holds 4 GB (3.7GB to be exact) of memory and each ROM only takes up about 20-75 KB (in most cases) so you can cram quite a bit of games, <e3> songs, pictures, and videos into one cartridge, this eliminates having to bring 40 different games and an ipod on long trips.

<e4> Next I learned that games weren't the only thing you can put on your DS. The R4DS also supports a variety of applications such as DSWeather, DSBible, DSBrowser (also DSHoBro, a different type of browser). These all take up a little more space than the games do but they allow you to do things such as <e5> surf the web, read the bible, listen to music, look up pics or videos, and check weather reports all from your DS. When I first heard this I thought that it was pretty amazing. I soon found out that the videos play at about 1fps (one frame per second) and that the pictures arent too clear, this makes that feature really crappy. But I give two thumbs up to all the other features, expecially the web browser because it uses Google and is really fast.

Sorry, I really can't help you with troubleshooting or downloading information since I just got this thing yesterday. I just figured that this would get the word out there to those who don't already know. <e6> I had to edit and removed the links by request, if you want ROMs you need to search for them yourself.

Well there you have it, how I came about the R4DS and a little information on how to use it. Its pretty awesome if you have about $25 and 45 minutes. I hope all this really informed and helped someone.

e5. DS Browser requires a memory expansion and the homebrew browser has had its Zero-Configuration Server offline for about 2 days now. Still at a standstill with the Internet.

e6. I was asked to remove the links to the ROM downloads. If you want them, you need to google them yourself.

 

You do know that ROMs are illegal if you haven't bought an original copy of the game.

Handy piece of kit, but totally illegal to play ROMs you don't own, don't do it! I don't!

 

Yeah my brothers getting a ds for Christmas I thought about buying him one of these to save us money (we're very poor) and he could have fun (hes a 20 year old but basically acts 7..)

at times, but you have to remember to

I do flashcard reviews. I have had tons of flashcard in the past year. R4 DS is by far the shittyest one. It was good back in its heyday but now its crap because the Team fell apart and got sued by Nintendo.

My favorites are the Acekard 2 and the Cyclo DS.

 

But if we could also step back a think... Selling gold for RS2 is illegal too isnt it? Touche?

 

Sounds cool, but I don't want to go into that much trouble for something that potentially could be illegal

 

Selling gold for runescape isnt illegal..in game its against the rules but its not illegal you cant be sued for it or put in jail.

yep ive got one this fantastic i add all my games on, but didnt know u could add browsers and music on there i mite try it, i recommedn this to everyone

 

Well thats 2 of us who have it. it is pretty cool. i have 150 songs and 7 games on mine with a 4 Gig card and have only taken up about 1.1gigs so far.

If you dont know much about ROMs or other software, you wont really understand this. Basically all it is is a NDS game with a slot in the top of it for a Micro SD card (the little card in your cell phone...). you put music, games, etc on the Micro SD, then slide it into the game cartridge. Open it up and tada you have tons of games and music on your NDS.

 

I definately suggest you guys think again and buy an EDGE DS. Its probably in my opinion the second best card.

 

EdgeDS and CycloDS are both very good just because they are very simple to use. Although they dont support some things that the R4 does.

 

Sounds like a great gadget to have if your into the Nintendo DS. I am more of a PSP and Apple guy myself.

 

i never really got the concept of a playstation... traditional a b x y l r z buttons changed for l1 l2 r1 r2 x triangle circle and square? i thought it was a way to just be different and showoffy. i did hear somehting about a xbox handheld tho.

 

My R4 has a problem, lmao. Whenever I try to remove or add games, music, etc. it say's the disk or whatever is 'Write-Protected'.

 

Like? I have reviewed close to 10 cards and the R4 and DSTT have the least features out of all.
