My mom being the devout catholic she is, has a stupid explanation on how God works and operates. So we argued back and forth about it, and I took examples from the bible and I interpreted the way it could have happened. Then I gave her some of my theories.

After the shock and amazement of how sinful I am she wants to hear some more of these "bullshit theories" as she calls them

Example of one: Ok so everyone knows the story about the "Virgin Mary" right? Well I asked her what happened to women in ancient times that were pregnant and NOT married? She was reluctant to answer, I told her they got stone because they were whores. I then proceeded to tell her Mary wasn't your average whore, she was a smart whore and knew that she would die a painful death unless she came up with something quickly. SO she came up with the angel visiting her getting Gods seed and all that shit.

Another one I hit her with was "Have you ever played the game telephone? For those who don't know its a game when you have lets say 10 people spread out in a line. The first person makes up a phrase and repeats it into the next persons ear without anyone else hearing it. At the last person the phrase is so fucked up from the original its amazing. I told her that's what happened to the bible.

SO I would like to hear everyone else's theories on the bible/religion so I can throw them past my mom....thanks in advance!

 

Mmm good call, but I already hit her with the "why is there pain and suffering" She replied back "because of our sins, and that is what it states in the bible"

So I answered back "well I thought Jesus died to abolish our sins"
She didn't have a response for it...well she did have a response but its a bullshit one that I can't argue against "That's what is written in the bible"

but do you care to elaborate on "free will" and "natural disasters"?

As for the question, maybe an Atheist president would be good. They wouldn't have the bible holding them back from what could head America in the right direction. As of right now America's not doing so hot if you couldn't tell.

I would ask about pain and suffering and then when she gives you the "pay for our sins response" just tell her that god is supposed to be forgiving and not hold grudges.

 

I've got to say BayBay does make sense, God is meant to be this forgiving being, and yet he makes us continuously pay for our sins, how does that work?

 

I am struggling with religion (too?).
I have been going to a youth group for years now, and I honestly cannot find what people are talking about. It's hard to have faith, with the world up in flames constantly.

So, I have a few things to defend Religion and Atheism.

If you're thinking, "Why is there pain and suffering?"
God wants only people who are on fire for him. I think that earth is a test for God to choose his family. If you are not completely embracing with God's love, there's no way you will ever be able to accept him or for him to accept you.

One defending Atheism, that isn't blunt, that isn't simpleminded.
There are, let's see, basically, there are 4,200 religions. Believing that one supreme being created the whole world in 7 days is about as far-fetched as reincarnation, which can appear more logical.

The fact is, we are humans. Even if there were a true faith, a true path, our logic-based society would never embrace it, only a few can grasp that level of faith. I think that religion must be taught at a young age for it to be embraced, similar to brainwashing.

What happened to separation of church and state? Move to your own country. Adopt your own Constitution.
How old are you? Obviously a young age to be talking smack like that.
And what about the Old Testament? Doesn't it say somewhere, that thou shalt not judge?

I'm not exactly struggling with religion, I'm what they call a "strong Agnostic believer" Basically I feel that no one truly knows whether there is or isn't a god. What I always say is "There could be a God, or there isn't a God" basically neutral. I just put atheist help because I figured atheists would have good arguments =).

Thanks though, I agree with you. Every religion brainwashes you from an early age. And what gets me is. Where I was born depends on my religion. If I was born in somewhere that practices Hinduism that's what I would be practicing. And THEN Christianity would be wrong because that is what THEY told me. Vise-Versa in every religion.

Other than the fact that the Bible was written by different authors 50+ years after the 'events' happened, it's just a book.

That and the contradictions. God commands "Thou shall not kill", yet he orders the killing of countries and cities.

There are some atheist theory's that have some depth to them but a lot of them are just stupid.

There's no way to prove/disprove god. You can tell your mom of why you think god is nonexistent but after it's all said she still has the choice to believe or not.

 

Ok, so it sounds like your mom clearly thinks you are stupid and has called you a sinner, so now all you need to do is recite this quote to her:
