DVD burning

Alright, here is the reason I can't just burn the file (.avi) to dvd. If you dont care skip to parageraph 3

My DVD player/recorder broke about a month ago. I am trying to burn a movie to a DVD for my girlfriend for Christmas. The file I have is .avi, and I don't know if her DVD player will work with that, so I would much rather have it in MPEG-2 (standard DVD format) format. My dad has 3 DVD recorders in his computer, but he uses those for work. This week is is burning around 1,000 DVD's and that will take the whole week. The project he is starting starts Monday. He can't let me borrow a DVD Drive until sometime next Saturday. He can't let me loan one tonight/tomorrow because his computer is touchy on the hardware side because he has a bunch of backup storage and confusing hardware in it.

What I need is a way to burn a .avi file to MPEG-2 without converting it first. I don't have a DVD drive so I need to put the .avi on a flash drive and give it to my dad to burn. I need an application that converts the movie while burning it.

It's kind of hard to explain, but thats what I need. Or something that will do the same thing. My dad wont use pirated software.

 

Could you not convert the .avi on your own computer using something like avi2dvd (freeware), give your dad the converted file, and simply let him burn that to a disk? Because if your flash drive is >4.7GB then there's nothing stopping you from doing that.

 

from the way he described it, it wont work like that. It has something to do with encoding the file onto the disc, not just having a file on the disc. Correct me if I'm wrong

 

You need to re-encode the .avi to a load of .vob files or a big MPEG-2 file. You then need to burn it to DVD using DVD-burning software.

Do this:

1) Download avi2dvd.
2) Convert the .avi files to .vobs using your own computer.
3) Give him all these files that avi2dvd outputs.
4) Let him burn those onto a DVD.

That should do it.

EDIT: I don't know what he means by the problem being about encoding the files onto the disc. If the files you stick on the disc are the type which will work in a DVD player, and if he already has DVD burning software (which he clearly does), then there's no reason why it wouldn't work.
