Good job! I'm just beginning to play guitar also, currently have an acoustic one, and I'll buy an electric one soon.

Got any tips to start off the guitar?

 

My only tip is don't make the same mistake that I did.
Learn normal chords (A, B, C, D, etc) before power chords.
Power chords are lot easier and will get you very lazy with playing guitar, and you'll never want to learn normal chords, but normal chords are essential for playing some songs and gaining valuable skills with the guitar.

You're starting off with the music I started off on. Eventually, punk gets boring and over time I ended up playing some heavier types of metal and no, not Metallica. Anyways, when I was watching your Dropkick Murphy cover, you were downpicking the whole Irish intro part. Google "alternate picking" and get that down. It will put a lot less stress onto your hands and once you get it completely down, you can pretty much play anything your heart desires.

 

Thanks for the feedback. I've been working on alternate picking, basically it screws up my accuracy (when I'm about to start picking a new string, sometimes my pick is on the opposite side of the string that I am using to the string I'm about to start using, my pick will get caught on the string and will make me screw up. I understand that I'll soon get better with this, though. I use alternate picking for other songs that are quick, I just haven't gotten the skill to do it for that song yet.

Anytime. Practice makes perfect. Even though I'm into more technical music, I still haven't got alternate picking down good. Even if you don't like metal music, I'd recommend trying to learn some Metallica or something of that sort to help get it down. Metallica plays a lot of tremelo type riffs that will get your rhythm down with alternate picking.


A really fun song I just found that you would probably like is Long Since Forgotten - Just Listen. Have a listen here. I'm pretty sure there's no tabs out for it but it'll give you a little challenge to figure it out yourself. I have, but I can't be bothered to tab it out.

What I would like to see out of you is some more feeling. You don't really seem like you get "into" the music, if you know what I'm saying. If you have a passion for it, don't be afraid to let it all out. Just my two cents. Also - don't rush! Just lay back and groove with the music. Keep at it bud.

Thanks for the tip, I try not to sacrifice accuracy for energy. Once I become more comfortable (especially with standing up), I'll be sure to add more in.

Hey Matt, I've seen some of your videos and I like them, because they sound pretty good, just a few mistakes now and than, but that's normal. I also like that you play the music I like too! I'd say, keep it up, you're doing a great job.

But the thing I dislike a bit is the high sound of your guitar, maybe if you'd turn the bass up on your amp, just a little, it would sound better IMO.

 

I normally have Bass and Treble at the max, and middle in the middle, I may try lowering the treble a bit though.
