    Smart - A nagging question.

This was nagging at my brain constantly, earlier.

What defines whether or not someone is "smart"?

Does this question fall under whether or not someone can fix a roof, or answer a math problem, ect? Is it the ability to understand the true nature of a situation?

Basically, I'm lost. What better place to ask this, than Sythe?

    Smart - A nagging question.

I think defining someone as smart is when they excel at anything, in any area, that requires them to use their mental ability. Someone such as a top athlete would not be "smart" as they are only using their physical abilities... but someone such as a top athlete sporting coach would be smart as they are teaching and also are using their minds in order to make use of the athletes true potential

    Smart - A nagging question.

Wouldn't the two co-exist? It takes mental abilities, to any extent, to perform physical things, so wouldn't doing physical things fall into the mentally strained category?

But you can consistently find people that are just complete brawn and muscle. They have barely any intelligence and rely on just their ability to run extremely fast. Sure, it takes some mental ability to perform physical activities, but almost everyone has this mental strength and some just lack in the PHYSICAL side of it. Being able to know how to run doesn't mean you excel at knowing how to run, as most people know how to do this anyway...

    Smart - A nagging question.

Exactly! So keeping this in mind, what makes someone considered "smart"? The fact that they have any amount of intelligence more than is needed to perform a physical act?

It's not like there is any test that can truly determine whether or not person A is smarter than person B. In this knowledge, what determines?

    Smart - A nagging question.

In my opinion, smart is having common sense. So many retards these days don't have common sense and can't figure out easy things.

If you have common sense, you can work on everything else. Common sense is the basis to everything in my opinion.

What if I had common sense enough to know not to touch the hot stove, yet not enough to know not the touch the strange coal on the ground? Am I smart, considering I know not to touch the stove?

If someone is smart or not is an opinion. I may think one is smart while another does not. Both are valid just different opinions. The would go for classifying if someone is cool or not, it's all opinion.

If they don't realise that coal is radiating heat, then they in fact do not have common sense :p.

I think smartness is shown by perseverence, and how quickly someone grasps a certain concept.

    Smart - A nagging question.

Are you retarded? Athletes are smart as they know what to do on the field and are able to strategize. In order to have agility, you need to be smart to know how to move your body. It doesn't matter how strong or fast you are if you don't know how to move your body.

There are many types of smarts, but the most important to me is "street smarts." This is how well you can reason and make decisions in life. Everything else is secondary. My dad is a really good radiation oncologist, and makes tons of money, but because he has horrible street smarts, he lost a lot of money making stupid decisions.
