Question on Torrents

Im trying to get my head around torrents.

Especilly the Sharing ratio - does this apply as a whole, or only for private trackers?

And how does the ratio work - Must I upload something? Or can Icontribute by simply seeding for ages?

I read bit on the ratio and this is what got to me -
does ratio affect everything torrent related
can it be improved soley by seeding?



Also - can any1 provide me any invitations to any good torrent sites?

Sharing ratio in your torrent client just tells you in total how much you uploaded vs downloaded whereas your ratio on different sites reflects how much you have uploaded with torrents from that particular site.

Your ratio on private sites is the ratio of uploaded/downloaded. It can only be increasing by uploading data, not just seeding something.

Ratio doesn't have to affect anything torrent related, it is just that many sites have rules as to what a minimum ratio is and will ban if you go below that. On public sites there is no obligation to seed, but it is nice to.

but there isnt that much data for everyone to equally upload and download.
I mean - whats the point in uplaoding something that is already there?

direct download is the way to go man, tourents can be skechy

Everyone who seeds contributes to another person download speed. Therefore as you seed your helping multiple people who connect to you for data. You aren't directly downloading from a server, it's the other people who your getting it from. The higher the ratio means you aren't a leecher and contribute by helping others.

 

The files are not merely on the server.

You should understand, peer-to-peer means that others connect to you. You upload what you've already gotten from other people, and those people subsequently upload to the people who connect to them. In short, you are receiving things by downloading from other people, and other people are receiving data from you.

This is why it is called sharing.

 

I'm pretty sure seeding IS uploading data. >_>
