Yes, memorization... nothing else. The teachers just teach so we can get good tests and quizes. Many teachers, I'm afraid, are incapable of teaching for the long term because the curriculum demands them to be at a certain place at a certain time, all the time. There is never a place for a teacher to do exercizes that will help with the longterm memorization.

The reason I brought up this subject is because I have a persuasion speech Im to give in a few weeks, and Ive decided to do mine on either 'Increasing Funds for Cancer Research,' or 'Giving Teachers More Freedom in the Classroom.'

 

This is true, and most of the time, half the stuff you learn you forget, and half of it you won't even use in your life time. (e.g binary numbers etc)

I just finished going to a public school and for year9 im going to a private school.

It's definitely going to be better, as you pick what you want to learn, the teachers are good and you open a WIDE path of opportunities.

this is just life and the best will succeed and be more respected.

 

I agree that yes it is a memory game, while some skills might be learnt, a majority of schooling is just revising and memorizing what teachers tell us.

 

Like how to shower with boys our age.. Mmm.


Anyway, yeah. American schools suck.

 

Bureaucracy in general is a joke.

Three days ago in the middle of class I yawned, went to cover my mouth, said excuse me, got detention, didn't go, recieved an extended Administrator detention after arguing my point and the fact I keep recieve bogus detentions, etc.

 

School is obviously needed, its where we learn..

I aggree, that alot of the stuff done in schools now is pointless, and probably only about 50% of stuff taught is actually worth being educated on.. But its still the main learning resource people get educated by.

I feel you dude. but that's how school is and this is how my father said it to me.

You cant win against the teachers because they have the more power. even if they are wrong, and you know they are wrong, they will not admit to it and you will get whatever the consequence is. just accept it and do it.

Though i agree with him TOTALLY. (when i get in trouble, they sit me in the year level room with all the year level staff, one comes and talks to me, then the rest agree and say things like "yeah, and remember the time?")

but its good that you didnt go. trust me, if your parents agree with you 100%, there is no need to worry, your just showing how BAD the school is and how BAD the school system is.

It is, As your there to get grades, from exams.. For exams you just need to remember certain parts of topics, and soon after, alot of the knowledge you will forget anyway.

Technically, yes it is a memory game. But you DO learn from it.

What I do not agree with is things like history, where you just learn dates, dates and more dates.

But maybe that's just how I'm programmed.

 

I agree that it's more beneficial to learn an analysis process, but in some ways I don't. Through our schooling we are shown these techniques and in some subjects we are using the techniques which we learn daily to put them to the test. Certain subjects such as; History and Religion, I find useless. But government and everyday politics is far more interesting and much more applicable to our daily lives. Math shows us analytical thinking which helps us follow procedures to find a common outcome. It also allows us to use the technique of mathematics and solve equations which we use in the world to formulate an answer. Science is also a subject which I think should be taught to everyone. The parameters of science are endless and these topics which we are taught in physics and chemistry can be used to expand the mind. Forming opinions is something which we do as a growing process. As we grow our logical thinking increases and we formulate our own opinions and personal ideas. School teaches us these techniques and shows us how to use them in the real world.

I dont exactly think school is a complete waste of time. I just think that a lot of stuff in school is worthless. As an example, If I plan on becoming a writer, why am I taking science classes,art classes, and math classes. I can understand going just up to Algebra 1 I guess, and basic science, but is Physics really necessary if Im going to be writing fiction. How does art help anyone that doesnt want to go into anything Art related? A writer should be taking more english and writing classes and less math classes.

It's mainly not like this I think because kids have a hard time figuring out what they want to be.
