Is School a Joke?

We held a discussion in class today about the school in itself.

The question was: Do you think PUBLIC Schooling has become more of a memorizing type environment?

I agree 100% You don't really LEARN anything. You just memorize what they tell you. Its like they are the SS, and whatever they say you abide by.

Discuss.

 

yeah its pretty much a memory game the smart people just have better memories than other people but you still need to put in a fair bit of effort to memorize all the different things and school is a pretty big factor in life

 

I will tell you one thing... Florida schools are absolute garbage.

 

School is pretty much bullshit.
The smart people get rewarded and the dumb people get un-rewarded(couldnt think of a better word)

 

Agreed 100%. I went to school in Massachusetts for 12 years, and I had a pretty awesome experience. I was on the A+B Honor roll EVERY YEAR.
I moved to Florida, and Can BARELY maintain a C average.

 

People here in Florida are just so damn stupid, maybe its cause they are all old and dying?

I think it's much more worthwhile to learn how to think, how to analyze something, how to form your opinions and think logically, than it is to know specific dates of events and such.

No, I mean they pretty much judge you on your memory.

That means you went to school from what '93-04??
Trust us, school has changed A LOT.

Because my parents are probably not as smart as say a calculus teacher.

Actually no, I have 25 minutes for lunch and 4-7 minutes between classes.
I believe I have some of the shortest breaks ever...
Now, on topic.
I do believe school is a joke, not only because the majority of stuff you memorize will only be used if you become a teacher.
But also, people don't get individual attention to actually help them.
Overall, school is a joke...

 

EXACTLY. You have to go along with the pack. If one individual wants to disrupt the class, you lose learning...Oops, MEMORIZING, time, because of that ONE person. Also, teachers just done give a shit. I have a Geography teacher who is also the girls Soccer Coach, and he is an asshole. He lets the Soccer players sit in the room, when they should be at THEIR classes. I mean, i wouldn't have a problem if they sat there and kept quite, but no. They disrupt. They gab with him about Soccer, and this and that, and we don't get to learn. Then he bitches at us when we fail a test. Next time he does that, im going to stand up for the rest of us, and just yell out, "WELL IF YOU AND YOUR SOCCER WHORES WOULD STOP TALKING, AND YOU TEACH, THAT WOULDN'T HAPPEN!"

I have a few other teachers that are just plain RUDE. One student was making fun of another, and said "Golf isn't even that great of a sport!" and the teacher replies, "Whats your Sport? EATING?!" I mean, its just RIDICULOUS.

Schools are also to into their sports. (Most are, I know mine is.) On the School news, Out of the 10 minutes they broadcast, 8 of it is devoted to SPORTS. Granted, I understand Senior Year, Sports, Recruiters, Scouts, ect. But that's only a handful out of the 2,000+ students in the school. The rest of us don't want to hear about sports so much.

I don't want to hear "OMFG GET HOMESCHOOLD MORON!!1!"
That option is not available to EVERYONE.

 

America's socialized schools (the ones you can go to for free) are all absolute garbage. You'll get an actual education if you pay.

 

While this is EXTREMELY true, Some of the public schools are 110% better then others. Its pretty pathetic that Americans have to pay for a decent education.

Why the fuck shouldn't smart people be rewarded? They are the future, not the retards who don't care about school who will become tomorrow's garbage men.

No effort --> no rewards

I think it has become less of a memory game that it was before, however it still relies heavily on memorization and regurgitation. But it's certainly not a joke, especially when you get to college and begin to learn.

But yeah, I think our school systems are a total joke. Other country's are surpassing us and we're not even on top in our high school education. Not by a few countries which is really pathetic.

 

Ehh.. everyone hates school. but i kind of think we do need it. we learn some things in school we can't learn anywhere else.

I've almost finished my education but I do feel that in the years following up to GCSE's are a waste of time, their unimportant. I bunked about 40% of the time in year seven, eight and nine and I've turned out perfectly fine and now am going on to achieve two A* and many A's and B's.

 

You're in the 10th grade, no? You memorized something about hitler that a stupid teach stressed over and over. I am learning stupid shit like this too, I completely agree. I dont remember the different microscopes we used, at the beginning I did, but its been like a month, if I actually learned it, I'd still know it. XD.
