Debate in favour of banning violent video games.

Hi guys, for my english homework I have to do a debate for banning violent video games. This topic was chosen and assigned to me by the teacher. The speech has to be 3 minutes long, and get your points across very well, in order to outweigh the opposition.

Any good points for this argument?

    Please Post.

    Thanks.

Debate in favour of banning violent video games.

Do you get to pick the positive or negative side or do you have to stay with the positive?

    Here is one.

Violent video games do not make people violent, it is simple minded people who are to stupid to choose between right and wrong, when there is clearly a simple choice.

But by banning the games, how can you talk about freedom?

Purposely make a horrible argument that everybody can see through.

"The state, as the ultimate authority, may do whatever it wishes, and you should be thankful for the privileges it tosses to you like so many crumbs from the table."

    Or something to that effect.

    * There are renowned psychological tests which prove that there is a link between violent video games and hostility. This link is significant and it is causal. Peer-reviewed scientific papers assessing the influence of violent media on people is overridingly in favour of this conclusion.

    * Children copy what they see on TV or in games, their unconscious minds may be influenced by these games to make them more aggressive adults.

    * Violent video games are far more interactive than other violent media, and as such are theorized to affect the player more than watching films.

    * No one is immune to the effects of media violence, and children are particularly vulnerable.

    * The entertainment industry has a lot of money and vested interests riding on violent video games staying legal, and use their influence over the news to skew the debate in their favour.

There are all my main points, I don't entirely agree with all of them, and think violent video games should be legal (I play loads of them! :D ). It makes a good argument though.

    Use this for more points:

Tell your teacher that she Is breaking your rights by forcing you to choose something if it is something you do not believe is right. You have a choice to believe what ever you want and other people must rightfully respect that.

-I did this when I was in school about a topic on Hitler and was suspended for talking about my own rights and freedoms. I fought against it and was allowed back the next day and got an apology from the principal and history teacher.

Just want to put out there if you use the whole studies thing. Your opponent will more than likely point out {depending on your age etc.} that the human race is clearly a violent race. We have wars for greed, people who kill from lust of items or people etc. So the fact that people can do some "tests" and come out with saying that violent games cause more violence is just ignorant. You see babies they laugh when you act like you're hurt etc. because it's there basic instincts in there mind saying that's joyful.

It is within your rights to play whatever video games you wish; banning violent video games would violate those rights.

I did a similiar speach in English last year except i was against banning video games.

You should ask your teacher if you can go against banning it, because video games don't make anyone aggressive, its just their bullshit excuse.

Some people use them for an excuse to steal and kill people Ex: GTA IV. But in fact they are completely able to understand what they are doing as wrong. By the way this is not really how I feel about this.

+1 if you just tell everyone to "just harden up and play the games", + another 1 if you take the opposite side of the argument, and put your speech to a well known theme song and sing that.

It would be so much easier if you were against banning it. If you were against, you could say a heap of junk about how you'd have to ban the nightly news, and shows like that. You'd have to ban movies with any violence at all, and TV shows (if they come up with, "that's why those TV shows are on late", you'd be able to rant about technology and how those shows are now on whenever you want them to be, thanks to our technology.) Try and come up with some arguments to those points, it sometimes helps me thinking from the opposition's side, and I'm on my school's debating team :S.

    EDIT: Theme was spelt incorrect.

Try to bring into the matter all of the POSITIVE things video games have done. They are used for military training! Helping our soldiers stay alive is absolutely key in wars oversea and on our home front. Also video games are a advance in technolegy, and the sale of video games is a big aspect on the market, Thus helping the economic status even though it is horrible at the time being.

    Just some thoughts :)

You need to read about the topic, more than 40 years of research have provided a proof-positive association between violent video games and aggressive behaviour. Go on Google Scholar and have a look.

EDIT: And before you say "correlation is not causation", bear in mind that this is not only inherently causal, but also that the average calculated effect of violent media is comparable for both experimental and correlational studies.

We have people teaching there kids how to hunt at a very early age that is violence. Do those kids grow up to be homicidal? No they in fact do not. As I have already stated the human species just as many other species are violent. anything that is a predator is violent. Anything with coherent thoughts is violent. Anything that can be provoked will be provoked some point in it's life and will have a violent moment of rage\anger.

When you look back on all of the "tragedies" that have happened over the last decade or 2 [and even further I am sure] such as the Virginia tech. situation the kid was constantly picked on etc. by his fellow classmates etc. and had little to no friends. Well. guess what being picked on causes? you guessed it anger, guess what anger turns into? Violence rather it be physical, or emotional it turns into violence none the less. An with this in mind if you research any other "tragedy" you will find some of the same things happening.

Not all people are as hard and tough as everyone else. They break under pressure very easily. An can be emotionally damaged very easily. Which usually tends to end up them lashing out in you guessed it violence.

This can be put in extremely easy terms. Take music

Rather it be black metal\grindcore talking about decapitating people and eating there flesh etc.
or rap talking about "Bustin a cap" in someones ass. It all comes down to one saying "If someone tells you to jump off a cliff would you do it" the answer is clearly "no" Unless you are weak and unbalanced in the first place.

Hey guys I asked the teacher, but he said that I couldn't change, as other students are doing it against banning them, and they need to balance it all out, so I have to do it. The Fat Controller great points, can you help me on how to start the debate with a question.

    Cheers.
