    Homework

This thread is for discussing why we have homework. Not to do homework, to discuss WHY WE HAVE IT.

I saw on the news that there was no improvement in grades from homework in my state. They did tests in 2005 with one school having homework, and another not (lucky). They had the MCAS tests, and no improvements were seen at all. The schools were using the same exact curriculum, and same exact books, same exact subjects, same exact learning time. Is homework even useful?

For me, homework is a waste of my time.

    Discuss.

    My recent post (READ!!!):

Why must we do it on OUR time? School's out means school's out for me. Why do some more work when school is out? The question is now seeping over to not why we have homework, but to why we have it when we do. I don't see why it's impossible for schools to do it on their time, when we are IN school. Homework is exactly what it suggests, and I really don't have enough time for more work at home.

    Homework

Its useless to some people, some it may help, varies.
It truely doesn't help me, its only a waste of my time, but a few easy 100%
    but 10% of the grade.
They believe it helps memorize the work,
if people stopped being lazy they could just study.

    Homework

You have homework because it sets you up for what you'll have to face in College.

This is quite evident in the Reading / English aspect, as it is greatly required in order to go through all the thousands of pages you must read a year.

Homework is also given to test your skills, and practice certain work / lessons which you have learned.

    Homework

I'm not the smartest person on the planet, but I can read better than the

the.... quick..... br-own.... fox... jum-mped... over.. the lazy.. do-og.

I can read normally, like the qick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog, and I'm in 6th grade. I'm surprised that kids read like that in 6th grade, and I read a heck of a lot better than them. I barely study. I'm still good at school. Homework has done nothing for me.

Where, specifically, do you live? If it's in the US, name the city.

    ^^ Lul.

I don't believe in work out of school.

Homework is their way of getting more hours of school in without being in school, it has nothing to do preparing you for college.

    Homework

I dont see the use of homework, i do not pay attention, do homework, listen, or try in school, and yet i still get 70-100 on everything aka B's or A's if your in US. I find no use for it, since in canada, in my school, were only marked on tests pretty much.

    Homework

Homework means nothing to me, the only way I can study is if a teacher or someone who will teach me the knowledge is present. I make great grades, I am in 9th grade, and I'm from Augusta, Georgia, US. My IQ is 170 and I scored a 1750/2400 on SAT in 7th grade. I'm 14 y/o.

    Homework

Mines 112 :) Eh, homework to me just consumes time, I always get distracted, and it does nothing to help me. We had to do like 24 times tables with like the numbers all mixed up. I asked the teacher why, because I learned this in 2nd grade, and she said that it was to "sharpen your skills". I did all of them no problem in like 2 mins each. Nothing happened to my awesome math-doing skills. I just see no point in it, and I'm glad I'm not the only one.

    Homework

Well, one reason i think so, is because alot of people dont pay attention, and if they cant do the hw, the teachers can help more, and i havent taken an actual IQ test, i took online ones haha, i dont think im that smart, but people say im smart for being 12 anways.

    Homework

Are we meant to be impressed by the 1750? I don't really get it...Trust me, your IQ is not 170 if you got a 1750/2400 in 7th grade. I got a 2320 in 7th, and my IQ is nowhere near that high...

You want to know what homework really does? It allows teachers to blow off the first 30 minutes of class by discussing, while really not teaching anything new (for the vast majority of classes, like English, Histories, etc.)

However, homework can be helpful IF and ONLY IF the teacher makes you learn something new for homework, like find a method of doing the problem, etc. Most of the time for Math, we're assigned a chapter in our textbook and then are told to do the problems, without any previous background knowledge. It helps remove the kids who don't work hard from the class, while accelerates the rate at which people learn in that class.

Anyways, homework prepares you for doing learning on your own. In college, are you going to have a teacher to guide you step-by-step through everything? No. If you don't read the textbook and apply your skills INDEPENDENTLY in college, where there's only a few exams a semester, you're going to be in serious shit.

What are you talking about? Without work outside of class in math and spanish I would be completely lost. Often my history and english assignments come across as pointless, but some help.

    Homework

School was originally created as a form of daycare for parents who worked during the day.

Now some parents work later, so homework was formed.

    Homework

it also teaches people to work in different environments, so the stress and distraction levels are different.

then just standard revision to help keep information the peoples head.

to prepare them if they need to do overtime in a job.

    lots of reasons :( haha

    Homework

I don't really think people understand the depth of what homework is.

You are given homework so you can go over what you learn in your OWN time so you understand what you've been taught, and if that isn't beneficial to studies then I'll eat my foot.

    Homework

Is that a trick question? Homework teaches you the material you are supposed to be learning. Its no wonder Asians are taking over the world; they do their homework and get all the jobs. Sure its boring, but it helps when you need to get into university. Trust me, its useful.

    Homework

It is also regulation in most board systems to have set amount of "tasks" for students to go towards the grade average. By just having tests, those schools would not meet the quota for the system. Example:

4 tests in 6 weeks for an average of say 80, if 80 was made on every test
    OR
    4 tests and 10 Homework assignments. If completed the HW would be a 100. So... 4 Tests X 80 + 10 HW X 100 = 1320 /14 = 94 Average

You see , by having homework it allows students to , in essence, make better grades because they actually DID something while not in class. It promotes integrity and dependability, while maintaining a sense of work ethics, and becomes rewarded with a higher grade than say not having homework. But, in the same hand, the studies ARE right that there isnt that much of a difference in grades, because the way the humn mind works, it will retain more information in a classroom than at home simply because the bare fact is that our minds are lazy and we retain it better because we are being told all of the knowledge insted of looking it up or reading it.

Maybe this will you give you some insight as to why homework is a good move by schools of today
