Do you think thiests hold us back?

Self-explanatory, do you think people who believe in a god hold us back as a species?

Think before you post.

 

Seeing as theism in some way, shape, or form has existed for thousands and thousands of years...not really. I had to read this packet about the Universal Human Psyche, and tribal religions -> portable religions have really evolved over time. They are basically inevitable, because people will always need a method of finding answers in something that is greater than themselves. And many people attribute this to God. Theism, while irrational, seems to be perfectly natural.

 

The opposite. Theism has pushed society to progress in many ways, moral evolution, for example.

 

Basically, if we didn't spend so much time, effort, and money into our own religion, would we actually be better off?

 

Loaded question. The answer is yes.

 

yes.. Simple as.

 

In the past, theists advanced human civilization enormously (Arabian astronomy, mathematics, etc.).

I'm not so sure that they are at the cutting edge anymore, though. A lot of science is pushing the boundary on what theists are traditionally opposed to.

 

i feel that that this may have been somewhat an issu years and years ago, but now i feel that it doesn't necassarily hold us back in advancing in technology, seeing as many people these days, don't fear god/god's as much, but i do feel it may, just not to an extent that should be an issue for us to worry about.

 

During the age of civilization, religion was vital for human advancement and growth. Now we have exhausted the resources it has given, and it is no longer necessary and may become detrimental to our society, if it has not become so already.

 

I consider Religion and Theistic thinking to be the birth of Science, with a twist. In the middle-ages people thought a giant held the Earth up and when it rained God was angry. We have scientific explanations for both of these now and it is accepted that these are [currently] the best possible explanations.

People still consider there to be a 'God' who wiped out the dinosaurs or created the universe. We have fairly undeniable proof that a meteor hit Earth but as there is no actual 100% undeniable proof of this happening, more...wishful-minded people jump to a God.

Religion, when it comes into contact as a replacement for Logic severely hinders our progress and understanding of the world as nation.

 

yes i belive it has held us back. think of all the time/money/will power/labour we could have used doing things instead of debating/searching etc for the "answer".
