The Catholic Chruch Corrupt?

I think the Catholic Church is kind of corrupt, because in the years hundreds of years ago, the Pope was the most powerful man on Earth, he controlled kings and emperors and rulers.
Today they control shit.

Do you think they've done more harm then good?

 

Their power has had highs and lows, lower now because so many people don't bother with it now, and thus, their power is low.

 

Christian church has blood on it's hands. It has had throughout history, and still does, and still will.

 

Wait so is it going to get more powerful in the future?
Well, since there science, people don't believe it anymore.

Their power will decrease further, they will never have power as close to what they had back years ago.

 

The Church was practicing nepotism, along with other sins, including the buying and selling of church titles back in the 1200s(check?).

That's the reason for the large amount of protestant churches.

One of the main reasons, for a majority of protestants, in the world, english speaking, is that king henry wanted to get married with Ann Boleyn, but was stuck with queen Katherine. King henry, wanted a divorce, but the pope said nope. So, king henri got angry and changed to being anglican, thanx in part to, cromwell, his secretary who pushed him into killing/destroying/looting the church. That's how, English had so much $, they looted all of the churches.

 

They were also selling "guarantees" to heaven.

 

Lest we forget; Hitler had the Catholic Churchs approval of the extermination of Jews. The Catholic Church was involved in the Crusades (which they later denied, despite Catholic 'warriors' admitting it). The death estimation of the 12 crusades ranges between 900K-1.1 million. Half of the people killed were fellow Christians, the remaining were Jews, Muslims, heathens and pagans.

Oh, and the Spanish Inquisition. The death estimation is between 3,000 and 5,000.

The Catholic Church is without doubt one of the most corrupt systems that still manage to rule.

EDIT: as Louis said too, it was not uncommon for priests to charge a fee for salvation.

 

Every freaking church and religion is corrupt. Fact.

Lol, wut?

The Da Vinci Code is a fictional book, with many liberties taken in its writing. Reading it as even slightly factual will completely skew any opinion you have; it is not a historically accurate, it is a story.

Everybody seems to have thrown out ideas of why the Catholic Church WAS corrupt, but that doesnt seem to be a fair representation of the present. Yes, somebody mentioned that there have been preists or other 'catholic clergy' members who have been involved in some nasty things, but the actions of the individual can not be used to evaluate the whole. Thats like saying that a police force with one bad cop is completely corrupt; something that clearly isnt true.

 

There are always issues when you mix money and faith.

 

The main reason the Catholic Church is losing power is because in my opinion religion is slowly dying.

 

The problem is that it's not just a few social-outcast members of the Catholic Church who committed those atrocities. The historical records has lead historians all the way to the top, all the way to the Pope(s).

 

I think this thread needs to remove the questionmark from it's title.

 

Again, you refer historically, something I can agree to; the evidence is right there. I am refering to present context, not historically. Personally, I do not feel there is much corruption in the present Catholic Church, at least no more then there is in respectable Government or police forces. The actions of the individual can not be used to evaluate the whole.

comparing them with other church's the main reason why they have so many members because they believe in a severe form of guilt and harsh punishments for it..
where as in other churches you are taught that forgiveness is the most important thing
