    Facebook more official than life?

The post about statuses reminded me of the fact when you're on facebook and a relationship has bloomed, it's somehow automatically deemed official.

It seems as though anything that's in real life is a rumor until it hits facebook and becomes "facebook official".

    Thoughts and feelings?

    This made me lol.

And you make a good point. People are becoming less social in a physical sense through technology.

It will be the downfall of our generation. Kids have less self-esteem because of online communities like facebook and myspace, just look at your 13/14 year old siblings locking themselves in bathrooms to take supermodel snapshots of themselves. Officially pathetic.

The human social network is breaking down and giving way to online profiles... Instant info about an individual- getting to know them is no longer necessary...

We are spending more and more time making our self-images 'e-approved' while letting our real social self-image wither. The organizations/companies controlling the online communities are using 'officialism' to entice the youth who are desperate for approval.

I think we need to start looking elsewhere for approval. Feeding our addiction to communication will halter our progress. The more time we spend on myspace checking our approval ratings is time we haven't spent curing cancer.

That's how I find out about all the relationships in my school. I log onto facebook and it says "(name here) is now dating (name here)" or something along those lines.

Facebook really is a great site.

Exactly. It's obviously more important to be socially active in real life but facebook helps for profiling people that you know but not really.

    ROFL. +1.

If you don't know about it, why does it even matter? If you're friends with the guy, he'd tell you. If he doesn't, then obviously you should probably think twice before stalking him and checking out his relationship statuses... I also find it really, really dumb when people post pictures of themselves drinking or doing drugs, but that's just me.

    Lulz.

You know you could actually make friends instead of having pretend ones that go to your school. Then you will know about them than just who they are dating.

No doubt, online communities are wonderful tools of communication, but would you all agree that Facebook is unhealthy for generational development?

    Facebook more official than life?

Basically +1'ing my post :) Tyvm ^_^ Exactly.

First of all, I don't think Facebook will be around much longer. I don't know why, but it just doesn't seem to me like it will. Something new will pop-up, and it'll catch on and be the next big online community. But no, I wouldn't agree with this; before, people had to ask people who are friends with the people in the relationship to find out information about them, and that just puts everyone in an awkward situation. If you want to be awkward and a sketch, and look up who people you aren't friends with are dating, be my guest but it's not good.

I think Facebook is very good for a few other things, however. It's a nice tool for communication, and you can also meet some new people and catch up with old friends.

I also forgot to add that nothing on the internet is more official than your life itself. Internet isn't real...

    Facebook more official than life?

Regardless of how long its going to be around, it has already affected (some might say infected) so many, particularly in the younger generation. It may go away tomorrow- but will the negative effects just vanish with it?

I think not. Many fads have come and gone, some have left more permanent marks. Online communities have revolutionized communication. You see, the younger generation is adapting that as a first-priority form of communicating. Once these global networks fail- the same generation will lose its sense of networking amongst each other.

My point is, sites like Facebook and Myspace are weaning society away from face-to-face interaction, and that is most unhealthy.

Lol. I hope this was sarcastic...most people in my school, if they're in a relationship, intentionally say they're engaged or "are in a complicated relationship" with someone else. That way sketchballs can't really do stuff like this :S

Check out this sweet new site: Youtube.com. YOU FAIL.

How about phones? Text messaging? IM? Hell, even this forum? Do those encourage face-to-face interactions? I'm not saying I disagree entirely, but IDK, I don't see anything wrong with it. The relationships part, though, is just stupid.
