The real dangers of somebody getting your IP

Well, people's IP's are easily accessable... Teamspeak basically gives them away, some forums have a little thing that tells you their ip... usually if you get into an arguement with somoene on the net they'll say 'I have your ip! you're so fucked!' or something like that. But what really are the dangers of getting somebodys IP?
I've never actually seen any damage done with an IP...
Can somebody please enlighten me?

 

There is some way to get into someones C drive but thats Lan hacking.. not sure tbh.

 

It can say what country you are in and possibly who your ISP is. You can't find personal information because there's privacy laws, but you can use it to report them to their ISP if they are spamming you or something like that.

Indeed that is the problem. Most people try to hack with Netbus, they send you a patch, when you accept they'll open Netbus. REMEMBER they only need your IP and port to gain acces onto your computer.

 

They can hack you. And send viruses, kill you're net.

The worst someone could do is either do a port scan and /attempt/ to exploit a service running on your computer, and possibly a ddos attack. The general location of your area/ISP location can be found, but that's just about it.

Otherwise, your IP address is useless to most people.

basically you can't do shit, you can tease a bit, but not hack, you need more than just Ip address.

To get any information with an IP, you'd need a court order to your ISP to release.

 

IP addresses are used when computers communicate with each other. There's practically no danger in someone being able to access your IP address, unless they're planning to contact your ISP with regard to some law you've broken, or plan to hack you.

 

To a 13 year old on teamspeak your IP is useless.

 

This thread is basically going in circles haha. The only way someone with your IP address can h4x0r you is if YOU click on something that person sends you, and then if they can gain remote access to your PC, they can use the combination of your IP and the command prompt, as well as some other stuff, to leech valuable information (did you know that if you have your password saved on your computer, and like Windows auto-completes the password for you on websites (as asterisks), people can find out that password by downloading a simple program?)

But the IP address alone can't do squat. In fact, I can find each of your IP addresses by putting a little widget in my signature. It's really not hard.

 

My problem is ignorant people like you giving out advice with no actual backing or grain of truth to it.

 

That pisses me off SO much...especially when people are like asking for help, and your help like makes them paranoid or do something stupid. How hard is it to just keep your fucking mouth shut if you don't know shit?

 

There is more that they can do. basically filled around the same aspects you already said but much more troubled problems. such as . set up an app. that ddos's you every time you connect to your isp, causing it to crash, and have the problem of "no Internet" Also another thing when people say shit like this they are generally on a game like diablo, or a chat system like msn\yahoo etc. in which they can disable it making you re-download it to restore files, also kill your sound\voice and many other pesky little things. and when on a diablo open server such as the TCP\IP can steal you're accounts.

So in a sense some of the people who posted are correct but in the wrong way if that makes any sense, they just don't understand the cause.
