    Easter Island is a prophecy

When Polynesians first settled Easter Island, excavation records show that they found a fertile landscape, rich with every natural resource they needed.

From the statues, and the remains of their civilisation, we can hypothesise that they had a reasonably advanced civilisation. We could assume that they had the notion of division of labour, and had carvers, loggers, and all sorts of people to manage these skilled labourers.

Maybe, much like today, these labourers shouted down those who pointed out the rapid deforestation? Surely the economic value of the tree would decrease to a point where no-one would care when the last one was felled, maybe the loggers were a forebear of the loggers of todays chanting "Jobs over trees!"

The Polynesian's crafts were far too poorly-made to escape the island, and hence the population of 2000 when it was discovered by Europeans. We can escape the Earth no more than they could escape Easter Island.

Will we learn from their mistakes? Discuss.

Well, deforestation is OK to a certain extent, but greed tends to get a hold of people in a monetary system, we know what will happen if we continue doing this and so are the people who are actually cutting down the trees, it's just a matter of when these people will actually figure out that it's not worth it.

But I don't really know if deforestation is actually that bad as people say, but what I do know is the global warming does not exist or that we're not the cause if that's what you are getting at.

This is a great debate in its of its own right. I agree with you here; global warming is just part of Earth's cycles. It's just coincidental that this slight warmth stage happens to fall at a time when manufacturing (and burning stuff and whatnot) is at a peak.

Plus, cows give off more greenhouse gases than cars. So, that's pretty funny. Is it a prophecy? I wouldn't go that far, but we should definitely consider the few mistakes the Islanders made.

i agree pretty much with both of the last two posts here about global warming. and i do think we may stand to learn something from easter island. however, we will never completely run out of natural resources (i'm 99% certain of this) because we will kill each other before too long.

something interesting about easter island is that the natives used up their resources building GIANT STATUES in a mammoth "my statue's bigger" contest. i can see parallels there to our society as well.

and matthewi love your sig. A LOT :).
