Wiping history off your hard drive?

Completely erase everything on the drive, or just your internet history?

Delete history in Internet Explorer (<6.x)
    1. Close all running instances of Internet Explorer and all browser windows.
    2. In the Control Panel, click Internet Options.
    3. Click the General tab, and then click Clear History.
    4. Click Yes, and then click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

    Delete history in FireFox
    1. Go to Tools -> Clear Private Data from the menu bar in FireFox
    2. Check the things you want deleted (in this case, Browsing History & search and form history)
    3. Hit 'Clear Private Data Now'

Wipe clean your whole hard drive (warning: I MEAN THE WHOLE THING)
    1. VISTA: Go to your %system% folder (usually C:\Windows\system32) and right click on cmd.exe -> Run as administrator
XP: Go to Run in the start menu and type in cmd.exe
    2. Type in: format c:
    3. Watch your hard drive be completely erased >_>

    Yes just the internet history.
So typical of sythe users to automatically assume it's child porn, it's not. I was actually looking at things that aren't as illegal as childporn, but illegal none the less.

You say, "as if it never existed". The only way to do this is to wipe your HD various times, and even this way does not get rid of all the evidence.

If its your parents, and they are no good at hacking, use the above methods. If its the FEDs you are trying to get away from, I suggest a HD wiper that wipes at least 10 times.

Deleting your internet history won't save you. You have to use several proxies to get any sort of anonymity on the internet. Doubt you were looking at anything worth chasing you down for though, I hope :p

Bahah yes actually it was for use against the feds, just wanna be able to clear any evidence.

While we're on the topic, how do they find out you've been getting illegal things in the first place? I never understood how they knew when to raid your house to check your computer.

Does a hd wiper completely wipe everything? Or can it wipe selected things?

I'm not bothered with anonymity, just getting rid of every trace of it is what I want to be able to do. But I highly doubt there's going to be a raid on my house anytime soon :)

I'd smash it, and then burn it.

You cant really totally "erase" the history, Your parents couldn't find it but if the FBI knew you were looking at that child porn they could definitely find it. The only way to totally erase things on your hard drive is to format it.

No, even formatting a hard drive is asking for a recovery. You'd need to use something like a DoD-certified hard drive wiper to be completely safe, otherwise it'll only be a matter of time before the FBI can recover it.

Wiping history off your hard drive?

I'm not going to post any pictures, but this is basically what you need to do to PERMANENTLY delete browsing history. Basically, every single site you visit goes onto your index.dat drive, which is basically like a cache. Going to delete browsing history DOES NOT remove it from this. Every single site that any of your browsers have loaded any information from is stored in this index.dat file. Anyways...you need a file to erase the data from the index.dat file. My favorite is Tracks Eraser Pro (15 day free trial)

    1) Download Tracks Eraser Pro 3.3 (http://www.acesoft.net/te7.exe) and install. It's clean, I swear - scan it if you wish.

    2) Go to Start --> Search and search for "index.dat" and find the path.

    3) Go to Track Eraser Pro and hit Try Now. [I am not liable for any damage/important file loss...]

    4) Go to Eraser Settings and play with the settings, but make sure the index.dat checkbox is CHECKED under Browser --> IE. Everything else can be unchecked and manually deleted without Tracks Eraser (though it is much easier with TE).

    5) Once you have the settings you want, you can just click Erase Now. I recommend doing this overnight, as it uses a lot of RAM and can take over an hour to complete.

Voila, you've just COMPLETELY deleted the internet history off YOUR hard drive. Please note that there may or may not be a log on some external server of your browsing history, but it is NOT going to be on your computer.

They'll find you. They're everywhere. Lol.

Watch them have installed a chip in every computer in the world that has a GPS and keylogger and it backs up your whole hard drive onto a server, bhahaha.

They can just get it off their server.

If there are specific files you never want finding ever, then get and use a file shredder that uses the Gutmann method... You'll be able to find one free easily. You don't need a "DoD Certified" anything, though there are DoD-approved file shredding methods too.

Yup. You can download a 15-day trial of Tracks Eraser Pro (and if you want, you can search around for a crack/serial but I'm not suggesting that). That's got not only a file shredder, but also a great index.dat reader.

To permanently erase a hard drive or files/folders with absolutely no possible way of recovery (even with military/FBI recoveries) - then yes, a DoD-certified eraser would be required.

Download TuneUp Utulities, they have a thing called TuneUp Schredder, it deletes all data in your bin. You can choose to use the Guttman method or some other method.

 There are plenty of ways to erase data completely, you don't need a "DoD-certified eraser", whatever you mean by that. Bruce Schneier's erasure algorithm would work, for example.
