    Essential problem: Resident

Nice to see his o:line was removed, but he really shouldn't be a SOP in either of our main channels.

What's even worse is that he thinks that if something is removed by Shawn he can 'get Shin to put back'.

    _________________________

    Another problem: filters.

Turn the stupid text filters off, and let people say what they want to say.

    _________________________

Problem: Removing someone on the basis of disliking their conversation

If someone initiates a conversation, and a certain member of power doesn't like it, I typically see people kicked/z:lined/killed over this. It shouldn't be happening, really.

    _________________

    Problem: Too many nooby ops/halfops.

I don't mean to be nasty, but there is far too many ''noobs'' with channel access in #sythe. The majority of members have some sort of access. I recommend this access is restricted to Sythe.org staff members, as the channel is Sythe.org's official channel. Do as you please with #eliteswitch - it's entirely unrelated.

    ___________________

Lack of reports, lack of action

Few people report abuse, and those who do - such as myself in the past - have had typical responses from 'IRC-know-it-alls', taking Fouisgras as a fantastic example. Fouisgras: go away. You're being rude to Shawn and disparaging his methods of running the IRC, yet when you had power it was absolute pandemonium. (Thank God you no longer do..)

Do we really want thieves roaming around with power? I don't think so. I think you're lucky those who aren't banned from Sythe.org aren't banned from the IRC, anyway.

Not that you're even involved with the IRC these days anyway.

Resident left, his access has thus been removed.[/quote]

Partly agreed, I'll remove a few of them in a while

Agreed, however there is a line where a conversation is inappropriate and should be taken in either a different channel or in private.

No. Most of the staff couldn't log into nickserv without a client to do it for them. However, I do agree that the access list is too big, however every time I lower it, everyone complains.

If you need to report abuse, and someone is giving you trouble, just take it up with me in private.

I disagree, to an extent. If people aren't causing problems on the IRC or Sythe then I don't see the problem with them being there.

I agree with you about word filters, and being removed for voicing your opinion in a conversation, but I can't really say I agree with your other points...

As for Resident, I'd say he's a somewhat important part in the history of SytheIRC. He knows a hell of a lot more then most people on that server, and I think he's still be a good oper, but that's not my business.

As for the access list, nearly everyone on it is there for a specific reason. They are either a veteran, and halfop/op is basically a rank so people show "proper respect." Or they are someone who has strong moderation skills, and can use the ban/kick commands with good judgment. Those people are mainly Sythe staff and former staff. Finally, people who know a lot about IRC, but are not needed as an oper are on the access list. If that list was only for people who knew IRC very well, it would probably be cut down to five or six people, and neither you or I, Finn, would be one of them...

Finally, with this idea of "abuse." Personally, fooling around with new members, or throwing around a random kick or ban with people is not abuse...

Abuse is basically putting someone on the akick list for no reason, constantly kicking a person/people for no reason. Constantly killing/k:lining a person with no real cause. I'd also say that intervening with matters that have nothing to do with one, is considered abuse.(Deciding if an idle op should have their access on or not.)

Not bad points though, Finn. I wouldn't say you're a problem in the IRC, but you can't accuse others of abusing/not deserving access if you cannot live up to it yourself.

    Fantastic.

Yes Shawn, but you know as well as I do that people will simply remove people if they don't like the conversation, irregardless of whether it's ''appropriate'' or not.

Channel access is non-complex, and even Shredderbeam can cope with it. Giving the staff access rather than common thugs shows that there is a relation (and indeed co-operation) between the Sythe.org IRC and Sythe.org's staff members. After all, #sythe is the Official SYTHE.ORG channel. There's too much thuggery, and the site's potential IRC members are being repelled by people like Elfman banning them and such.

More to the point, if you want me to reconstruct the access list for me, you can ask me to. I don't care if people are upset if they lose their access, for it will be warranted.

Shredder is probably the most intelligent staff member.

Sythe staff will not get access because they are staff here. If they are active members, then sure they can get on the access list.

    That's not up for discussion.

I would suggest limiting access in #sythe to current (former staff too, maybe) but only if they are relatively mature and IRC-literate.

I wasn't agreeing with him at all. It would be terrible to have an official Sythe.org IRC. Then the IRC would follow the same path as the site.

Well, Shawn seems firm on the access issue, and realistically, it doesn't really matter who has chan access, as long as they aren't abusing.

Abuse is such a broad term now. Abuse is not having a grudge against someone, disliking them, or verbally attacking them. Abuse is not giving someone a kick for something they deserved a warning for.

Abuse is bullying, it's constant, unrelenting kicks and bans. It's not a kick or a harsh word now and then.

The way we differentiate abuse from faux-abuse is by its effects. Abuse forms a dorito, an irritating whiny brat who is neither wanted by the IRC community, nor wants to be in the IRC. This faux-abuse you all seem to be stressing about forms Shinoda, Resident, Pshynosis, and myself. People who can think. The reason for the abject drop in quality in the IRC is due to the idiots overwhelming those with the power to "abuse" them into shape.

Oh please, do not kid yourself, analyze yourself before trying to analyze others.

Hah! The 4 people you listed are the most negative people on the IRC, I have nothing against them but people who abuse(kick/ban/kill etc) a lot or frequently or for the slightest reason doesn't make them smart nor does it make them more helpful, you like to justify your actions, even though you and we all know you can't.

Most of the people in the IRC know you and the other 3 listed people as abusers or very negative(But non the less cheerful or funny at times), but you like to think you and your friends are the smart people who do more good than bad and you think that you know better.

Well, you guys are still going strong, I see no change for the better in the IRC, it's still fucked up as usual.

It is abuse, power abuse. (Remember the Jesse problem? He flamed me first and when I retaliated in a decent manner, you demanded that I apologize even though he started it and I was only using mild sarcasm for a very shot period of time and then you banned me, even though Shawn un-banned me very shortly after. Bias.)

I really have nothing against you, your friends or anyone you know/like or whatever, treat me with respect, and I will respect you back, I really tend to befriend anyone rather than fight, if you've ever caught me in a bad mood, I'm sorry. But I'm pretty sure I have never directly dis-respected/flamed you in anyway.

(I really am not trying to insult any of you guys and I don't dislike any of you, what I've said is just me opinion on how things are running, sorry if you've taken this in a wrong way.)

I've noticed a distinct jump in the enjoyment factor of talking to you since the hazing started, if only because you're less involved in the activity.

The 3 other people I listed were the people I either enjoy talking to or respect for their competency. I consider them all to have contributed to the better times of either the IRC or the site.

I like Jesse more than you, so you got in trouble for not apologising. How long does it take to say sorry?

The IRC has been fucked up since before you joined, son, and you've never experienced its good times, so you aren't really ready to comment on the cause.

Sort-of-not-really-but-slightly-similar suggestion: IRC web client (pjIRC or similar, pjIRC is currently the best at the moment) - it'd bring in more activity in IRC since some wouldn't be bothered downloading & installing an IRC client - and the link to it could be put in the bar below the banner.
