No one thinks you're an idiot. You forget, ignorance and idiot are two very different words. If you choose to gain "faith", if to compensate for pain, or whatever reason it may be, then it's your decision, and when you are asked, "Why do you believe in a God?", then whatever your reason, that it what you put.

I mean, the only idiots are those who have this faith, and know nothing about it. Know not it's origin, know not where it takes people, and any other thing. It's plain stupid.

    True that...

I actually believe in religion and science. I accept it when sience is able to prove something within a religion false (like Adam and Eve).
But theres some things that just can't be cancelled out with science. Ever since visiting Ghettysburg in 1999 I have been a firm believer in the paranormal (it's even how my belief and god first began to grow)... and I am pretty damn sure science will never be able to prove my own experience wrong.

And to lighten up the mood of this thread... =P
    I sha'll share a story.

My grandmother is a real uneducated bible thumper. I remember a few years ago I was explaining Darwin's theory to her... She snapped at me,
    "I AIN'T NO MONKEY!!!"
    So I said to her
"Either you evolved from a monkey or you're the result of Adam and Eve's incest, take your pick."

She still won't talk to me :[

But I had better stay away from this thread now.. lol
People who want to believe will and people who don't won't. In the end you can't change either side. A huge waste of time to try.

I don't understand why he wouldn't believe on the basis of evidence/reason. Surely that's what he does regarding medicine, economics, chemistry, and the like.

    I lol'd.

Why would you let a greater power (that you don't even know of that it is real) control your life/choices in life?

I choose what I do, not because some all-knowing, all-powerful deity says me to do so in an ancient book, but because I think what is the best for me.
If I (not) would murder a person, I would (not) do it, because it was (not) written in an ancient book, but because of my own choice, and my own view of good and evil.
In my eyes, killing is wrong, just wrong, it's horrible.
I hate the fact that people die, but also in my eyes, any Christian (muslim and zionist) God, Hindu God or any other God has nothing to do with it. I base my decisions on my own choices, because I value every persons life as valuable (in a moral way). I do not think people deserve to die, not even rapists or murderers. It way sounds strange/wrong, but I thinnk these people just need to get locked up, and regret they ever did that, and have to learn with living with that for the rest of their life (in jail).
Also, the love of God? Love is just created by chemicals in your brain. Do you really think that an invisible deity, watching over 6 billion people, can love you all, while there has been many proof (even in the Bible), that he is not allknowing/allpowerful?
There have been so much religions before christianity, and christians don't even give other older religions a chance. The chances of that the Greek Gods were real are as big as your christian God is real.
Eventually the Greek stopped believeing in Zeus and Aphoridite....
The same thing will come with your religion, people will forget it, and believe in their own "new" deities.
That has been going on for ages, for thousands of years. People have to find a reason between different (still) inexplainable things, like the creation of the universe (altough many people say the Big Bang was the cause), they still say God did it.
Untill last year, I was Agnosic, I thought God existed, but I did not believe in Jesus and all that crap, but now I opened my eyes. Christians need to face reality. It may be hard, but eventually you need to accept it. I still do not accept reality as it is, because I want to escape it sometimes, by drinking alcohol, or smoking weed, but I don't do that alot. It is just once in a while to escape from reality and just lay back, and have to worry about nothing. Relax and take it easy. (Modern) Religions forbid the use of sedating substances. They forbid drugs and alcohol (also a drug) because (according to their doctrine) it would make you stray away from faith.

I just know better, and I believe in nothing. I live my life just as good as all other Christians, and I don't give a fuck that, even if I am on a christian school. I just want to graduate, hahahahha.

Ewokish, I hope you actually know you'll be going somewhere after you die. You make it sound like if you agree with an idea of a God then you go to heaven. Being a Christian is a choice to follow Jesus' words, and to accept his forgiveness.
    Romans 10:9
That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

Hmm, probably because my family does really. I also believe in god in hopes of an afterlife. If I was born in a family of atheists, I would probably not believe in god.

So you believe in something that there is no evidence to support? You only believe it because you were raised to believe in a God.

So tell me this... When you were young, You were raised to believe in "Santa Claus" am I correct?

If I am, Then why shouldn't you believe in him now? After all, this is what you were brought up to believe in.

You dont need a god for hopes on an afterlife, and also, What you believe, what you hope, makes no difference once your dead anyway. It wont change the outcome and once your dead, it wont matter.

    Geeze dude...
I don't associate myself with a religion even though I believe in god. For all I know god is a donkey that craps hershey kisses. I do the best I can in life and hope that good comes when I am no longer on this earth. If I didn't make it to heaven for not listening to some old guy blabber on every sunday, I guess I won't give a shit 'cause I'll be dead.

If you really think that people would suffer in hell for being generous and doing well in life but NOT worshipping... then thats just messed up. If that was the case I might even call bull shit. lol.

I'm going to give some people something to think about. Don't take it too seriously, it's more for fun.

And for other people... How do you know god didn't create science? After all much of science is only theory. Like the Big Bang :eek:oo

For those of you saying that you don't believe what you can't see, then how do you know the wind is blowing? Your answer, "Because I can feel it." Right? Maybe people who believe in a supreme being feel it.

For all anyone knows the supreme being responsible for advanced life could be a teenage alien who stopped off on earth to take a piss on their way to Jupiter. The bacteria on the whizz mutilated info the first organisms. Therefore we are all alien piss o_o

Someone should probably take away my posting rights now xD

It's a bit different. The wind can be empirically measured. A feeling of God cannot.

Ewok, the wind isn't just a feeling you have. It's a metorological condition that can be predicted, measured, etc. A feeling of God isn't a real thing, it's just you convincing yourself that God exists and thinking about him very hard. People are very capable of convincing themselves almost anything.

I honestly do not. I mean, the logic of it doesn't add up.

An all powerful being, one force in the enitre universe, ruling an infinite amount of space for all eternity, monitoring every person and thing and keeping a constant and vigilant watch on them, and manipulating things to their liking/disliking and watching over them, and also controlling all malevolent and benevolent forces on every single planet in every single star system which expands forever and ever.

I dare you to explain that.

The thing about theists is that you can beat them over the head with the baseball bat of logic, but to a point it won't do anything. Many people are simply raised to blindly follow, and refuse to consider anything else. This, kids, is called ignorance.

Well actually I was raised Catholic, but I finally realized that it doesn't add up one day.

But anyway, Mr. I'mSoGoddamnSmart, tell me what your baseball bat of logic consists of. Prove me wrong.

Your choice is to accept what Jesus did (die for you) so you can have you sins forgiven, or not. Nobody ever said your becoming a slave. Jesus sets you free.

    He did create science obviously.

Yes, ok... Have fun pretending there is a God. Either accept it or not. It's not a joke.

Faith is irrational. Truths are known through empirical knowledge, or a priori reason - and it's usually the former.

Given that this is the intelligent discussion forum, those who argue from faith can leave.

There's a bit of difference between religious users willingly coming into SFA, and men in suits knocking on my door brandishing the Bible at me.

If anybody does not like me arguing with them, don't come into SFA. It's that simple.
