How to temporarily let-loose internet connection

Step 1 - Getting Started
Go to Start > Run.




Step 2 - Opening Up CMD
In Run, type in "cmd" without quotes




Step 3 - Releasing Connection
Type in "ipconfig /release" without quotes, and hit enter




Step 4 - Renewing Connection
Type in "ipconfig /renew" without quotes, and hit enter.*






*Note that it may take a minute or two to regain connection.

A kid in the Help and Requests section requested it, so I figured it may be useful for him along with some others.

 

If you said that it might take a minute or two to reconect, it won't work. He wants it precise.

Well it is a cool little CMD trick so thanks for posting it. It was requested in the Help section so I appreciate you making the guide. It helped me out, despite the fact that I will almost never need to know this. It is well written and structured. Keep up the good work.

 

What could you use this for?

I just don't understand how it could be asked for if you can't use it for anything.

There has to be some use.

 

By doing this I am pretty sure it changes your IP adress also??

 

If it did it would only change dynamic ip

 

I read that if you have a dynamic IP and release it, wait a few minutes, then renew it, you should have a different IP address. I dunno if that really works or not, but it's just what I read.

Without information this is about as educational to people as texture-less Braille to a blind person.

 

This is actually pretty useful for me - when it laggs for me i disconnect internet and quickly connect (i use dial-up) So now it will only take couple of seconds

 

Saying this is pointless is pointless , ip change can help a lot.

 

Apparently, going to your network folder and dragging it to the task bar can help you quickly turn it on and off.

 

This is not totally useless
There are several uses I use these specific commands for:
One: This tricks Prize Rebel into thinking I am using another connection (thought you could just restart router and/or modem)
Two:If your connection is running slowly this is an equivilant of "repair connection" on windows(a shorter version-less commands).
Just think of it as another way to do these things.

 

I just unplug the cord that connects my computer to the router. Or disconnect from wi-fi?

 

Actually for a lot of things. Bypassing rapidshare time limit for example.
