Learning in School vs at home

What do you guys find most useful? I'm currently in college for Software Development, but I self-teach myself all the languages before my classes.

In my case, I feel like learning stuff on your own is 10x better than in a classroom. I feel like I can learn more online in 30 minutes than I can in 4-5 hours of class and it's kind of pathetic to think of it. For example: In a full semester class (14 weeks, 3 hours a week), I learned up to arrays in C++, but on my own I could learn all of that in a week.

What's your opinions on this, or if you never learned in a classroom at all?

i must agree self learning is 10x better

however, what i do like about classess is that it keep you grounded

for example; i never go to my lectures since i prefer studying by myself, and self learning: I find it much much more efficient

but thing about class/lecture is even tho if you do not attend, it gives you a rough schedule to follow. learning alone, with no schedule can very easily become a mess if you do not have some kind of outline or schedule or some exam to look forward to. maybe you can sustain it foir a few months. but is it possible to sustain it for longer period of time?

    not for me :/

If there is a subject you are genuinely interested in (like software development), studying at home at your own pace is going to work out well for you. However in my case if you attempt to take U.S. History as an online course with no instructor, no classroom and no lecture, you may find that self-learning can be incredibly difficult if you have little personal interest in the subject.

Another example: I taught myself music theory and how to play guitar using youtube and various online resources. Because I was self-motivated, it did not take long for me to achieve results with consistent practice, but if I had to sit through group music lessons rather than learning and practicing at my own pace, I don't think I would be where I am today.

I started ditching uni classes because they were a drag. I learnt the same stuff (and more) in a fraction of the time. A good teacher may motivate you to work harder, but to really go above and beyond I'd go with self-teaching.

Yea, if you know where to head and what to learn, you get a clearer understanding

As long as it’s something you want to do an worth you’re time it won’t matter where you study

Not all knowledge is equal, some things are easy to self-teach, other things are more easily mastered in a more structured environment. Learning to 'code', or learning a new language to a basic level can easily be done on your own, other things such as asymptotic analysis or complexity theory, you might benefit from guidance from your professors or discussions with peers. Areas in Mathematics (which are very relevant to CS), such as Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, etc, you almost certainly want guidance.

The answer isn't binary, and it's not even the same for each person.

i like studying in school for the social aspect, you meet people while you study and you can ask your friends for help too.
