Potential overlooked name-change issue

Question: are current and prospective users permitted to take 'formerly known as...' names, either via making a new account or requesting a name change?

It's quite likely staff would decline the latter, if the 'formerly known as...' UT is still present on an account. Is there any actual rule/guidance around this? Are users permitted to take 'formerly known as...' names once an accounts 'formerly known as...' UT has been present for the required 6 months, and is no longer required?

Secondly, what about new users who create accounts with the same name as the 'formerly known as...' users, purely by coincidence, with no malintent, whilst the 'formerly known as...' UT is still present. What happens here?

Lastly, what about new users who create an account with the same mame as the 'formerly known as...', however, the account that has said UT is banned?

This may potentially result in users being mislead, and potentially scammed, alongside impersonation becoming more prevalent.

I just created an account using the last registered name of @Toby, the last name change processed.
Why is this even possible?

I think what both Sellerman and ugotgrilled are saying is that users shouldn't be able to create accounts previously owned by someone else, at least within that 6 month period; not why your name change was processed.

 

I don't think users should be able to create accounts with a name previously changed by someone else, even if the 6 months aren't up as it would definitely create some confusion. Especially for users who take breaks and come back to visit the site. If other users agree, a quick amendment to the rules may be justified?

Sorry i misunderstood the thread above, i totally agree that this can create both confusion and problems if the player decides to come back after a break.

 

We've made the following change to username requests and approved names:

The above should address and answer your questions. As for the users that have already picked up usernames, we will not change their names as this change will be from here on out.
