The Aftermath of Hurricane Ike *IMPORTANT THREAD PLEASE READ*

IF YOU WANT TO SEE EVERY PICTURE I TOOK, CLICK HERE

First of all I would like to say that I am completely appalled and ashamed that one of you mods thought to put my pre-Ike thread in the spam section. It's pretty insulting to know that you think one of the biggest disasters ever to hit Houston is spam. Really. This was a life changing experience for me, and if you can please listen to me and read this thread. It will do nothing but good for you, I promise.

    My Story

These past 8 days have been an extremely hard but good experience for me. Late night/early morning of September 12/13 Hurricane Ike hit the Houston area almost directly. 99% of Houston and the surrounding areas were without power from this hurricane. But what was even more amazing the storm surge this hurricane had. This was a category *2* hurricane that had category 4 storm surges, meaning the Gulf of Mexico rose its level up to 20 feet in some areas. What does that mean? It means the water absolutely rapes anything in its path.

I'm sure you all have seen something in the news about this hurricane, but I'm going to tell you MY story so you know that this is very real and certainly NOT a joke.

The night of the hurricane I stayed at my friend's house because we figured it would be tight if we hung out during the storm, and also because my house's power goes out very easily, and I wanted to stay cool that night, so I figured his house wouldn't lose power... but It did o_O. Anyways, all day thursday and friday the city looked very gloomy and grey in the sky, and finally the storm really got to us around 3 AM I believe. At that time our power went out, along with almost the entire city of Houston.

That was a picture of the hurricane at the very weakest part of it, at about 6AM.

When I went home, the streets were littered with debree, mostly tree limbs and leaves. Now when I say littered I mean they were EVERYWHERE.

This is a picture of my street, which wasn't nearly as bad as many neighborhoods.

This next picture is near my dad's office, this pole was his office's power.

    -:-:-:-BACK TO THE STORY-:-:-:-:-

So I went home, disappointed that my power was out... But I had absolutely NO IDEA the devastation this storm had caused. Just so you know, my power was out for 8 days. You might think I'm being a pussy just because my power was out for a while, but believe me it's harder than you think, you have no food in the fridge, no air conditioning (especially in Houston it's hot as shit!), no tv etc... But really, I did not get it bad. Most people in Houston did not get it bad. It wasn't until I went to my bay house in the small town of San Leon when I saw what exactly a CATEGORY TWO storm could do.

Before I go on, I just want to ponder this... A category two storm... wiped out 99% out the Houston area's power and wiped out many people's homes, but more importantly, this storm took people's lives. But just imagine, a hurricane can be up to a category 5. That's double what Ike was. Imagine a category 5 storm hitting in the same spot Ike did. That would be an incredibly devastating storm.

When I went to San Leon, this is what you could see.

    Not good...

Top Water, a local restaurant, gutted.

I've got about 100 pictures in all, if you want to see them pm me and i'll give you my facebook link.

    THE WORST PART

The worst was when I got to my bay house. This house was my favorite place in the entire world to go to. You have no idea the amount of memories my family and I had here. Most importantly, this was where we fished. I've probably caught over 500 trout here, my biggest around 29 inches. My uncle and I fought a jackfish that was over 50 inches here for over an hour... Fishing is a huge part of my life, and until we can fix our house, It'll be hard to do.

    Here we go...

There's our house. It actually stood a LOT better than a lot of homes did, but it was still pretty heavily damaged.

Want to see what a lot of houses looked like? How about this...

My neighbor's house. Yeah, I know.

A dead pelican.. actually kinda funny

    Inside our house.

Our pier... destroyed for the most part.

Again, if you want to see all the pictures, pm me.

    -.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-.-

In the end, everything is going to be fine, but this storm left a lasting impression on everyone's lives who were hit by this storm. The worst part of this storm is that it killed people. My NEIGHBOR was killed from Ike. I think right now the total death count is around 20, but still rising.

I spent a lot of time preparing this thread and I'm tired as fuck, so enjoy, and please, don't forget this.

Thanks guys, but still remember that the house that was wrecked isn't the house I live in, but still a huge part of my life.. My actual house hardly had any damage, just a few shingles fell off the roof and a couple leaks.

And no, my dog didn't die :) she was just hiding haha, sorry if you thought she died.

And as for the bay house, the insurance adjuster came today and since the house is still standing, we're not going to tear it down, just repair it. So we were actually extremely lucky compared to a lot of people.

And as I said, I didn't get it bad at all compared to tons of others.

Insurance should cover it, today we actually went down there to talk to the insurance adjuster, so it should be good.

True, but if a natural disaster can even kill one person, you know it's pretty bad.

And trust me guys, I am not the one you should feel sorry for, it's the people who actually LIVE in small towns like San Leon who got their homes destroyed.

Oh my, how ever will you live without your house on the ocean D: D: D: D:

Seriously, think about all the people who's houses got destroyed who don't have insurance, or the money to fix it. About the people who still don't have power or a/c.

I'm not saying you shouldn't be bummed about it, but I don't think you should come here basically asking for sympathy.

I know, which is why I have actually specifically stated that you should not feel sorry for me, a few posts up. I didn't create this thread for me, but for the knowledge of everyone here, so they can know and not just put things like this aside.

Believe me, nothing bad happened to me, and I don't need your sympathy, I'm telling you that people who lived in these areas need it.

Nahh, when I walked home it was around 7AM and it was just the very last part of the storm. Lots of people were outside looking around at that time.
