How To Use Fraps​

FRAPS is a program popular with PC gamers, it has 3 distinct features that gamers love about it. There is a FPS (frames per second) count, or in other words, how fast is their computer processing the game they are playing. There is screen capture, instead of pushing "print screen" and going to paint and doing all that crap just to get 1 awesome screen shot in the game, this is where you push a hotkey, and it takes a screen shot, and saves it in a folder, you can just keep pressing, and it keeps saving it, with little or no interference in a game. Then there is video screen capture, where you press a hotkey, and it records what is onscreen during the game, and until you press hotkey again, it will stay recording. When you finally stop, the video file will be saved as a .wmv or .mpeg in the folder that's designated.

Install it and whatever, and run it.


Now click on the screen shot tab, this should show up



1. That is where FRAPS will save the screen shots taken in game to. It would be a good idea to make the folder easily accessible.

2. This is what format the screen shot will be in, it usually doesn't matter, but some image hosting sites, only host certain formats, but it generally doesn't matter too much.

3. Pretty easy, which key you press,while in game, for the screen shot to be taken.

4. When FRAPS records FPS, there is a number in the corner of the screen, that tells frame rate. The first box tells whether or not to hide or show it when you take a screen shot. The second box is a "toggle" screen shot button. It takes screen shots every designated amount of seconds. Until it is pushed again, it will keep taking screen shot.


Next is the recording movies part of FRAPS, click the Movies tab on FRAPS and this should show up.



1. Simple, tells where movies will be saved. Just like the screen shots, just be sure to make it easily accessible.

2. The hotkey, is the key you press to start recording movies, if you don't have FRAPS registered, you can only have a maximum of 30 seconds per movie, which means you will have to push the hot key alot. If you don't need all 30 sec, just push the hotkey again. If you have registered, there is no limit to the length of the movie. Next to it is how you want it recorded, if you have a low end gaming rig, and are struggling to run a game as is, it is not recomended to record in high frame rate. Recording movies, will slow down your framerate by at least 3, and up to 5 times. Make sure your computer can handle it. You can also choose to record sound, it works fine, just make sure your computer can run it.


Next is the FPS, click on the FPS tab. This should show up.



1. This turns the FPS indicator on and off, if it is obstructing you game, then you can turn it off, or if you want to know, turn it on.

2. This tells where you want the FPS indicator to appear, which part of the screen, it is best to put it in a spot that least obstructs your game.

3. This is benchmarking, this tells how you computer performs on a certain game, you turn it on by pushing the hotkey, refer to number 5 for that. You shouldn't worry about the first 2 boxes, but the third one, is how long it will benchmark it, it is best to leave it alone. You don't really benchmark, unless you are a hardware reviewer, and you are comparing performances.

4. This tells whether or not it should save the statistics, this is for comparing scores with different hardware and drivers.

5. Simple activate benchmark, refer to number 3.


FRAPS can be useful when recording game montages, hope this helps in your progress.

 

Try to add some colour and maybe a nice heading, I personally did not lke the layout of the guide, Read up on "formating hint's & tip's", other than that nice guide.

FRAPS is great. Except for the fact that 2 mins of video can be near 3 gigs.

If you add colour to the guide, it would be a very nice guide. Good work of detail and pictures, it's an easy-to-follow guide. I believe I saw a few grammatical errors, but those can be fixed. Anyway, good work, 8/10.

 

With or without color, this guide is very nice. I believe it was well formatted, had helpful pictures when needed, and it flowed nicely. I have used FRAPS before so I knew the basics of this, but for many of use who haven't, this would be very helpful to read. Keep up the good work, I look forward to reading more from you.

nice guide but when ever it try to run fraps on counterstrike i seem to lag very bad and it stops itself can you help with that?

 

Lol I actually paid 30$ for the full version of this.. Has to be the best game recorder around!

I've recorded about 5 hours of crysis gameplay too. Anyways, great guide.
