I was reading up about study drugs and one name stuck with me, Modafinil I have a friend who swears by Modafinil to boost his productivity, I was wondering if you have ever used Modafinil maybe during highschool or college and how was your experience using it?

    Modafinil

This drug was developed originally as a Russian nootropic; but now has widespread use in the armed forces of many nations to combat narcolepsy and excessive day-time sleep disorder.

There is no known indication that will boost productivity- all it does is keep you up. However, it is a Dopamine transport blocker, so I can see where that side-effect comes for some people.

A very mild version of the effects of amphetamine I would say. Most likely non-addictive.

So how does it compare to something like Ritalin?

Would say it is much weaker in effect, even when compared to methylphenidates such as Ritalin. It is a good substitute if you don't have access to those though.

Methylphenidates do lead to you building a dependence tho?

All 3; Modafinil, methylpehnidates, and amphetamines have a tolerance build up eventually.

If used as prescribed and in a proper manner this tolerance build up can be delayed significantly.

This is why phyisicans have shifted towards prescribing "long acting" or "extended release" versions of these pharmaceuticals; eg- concerta (ER version of Ritalin) and Vyvanse (ER version of adderall). I do not know of an ER version of modafinil.

Are you speaking from experience? Availability isn't an issue, I was just wondering if Ritalin is worth the risk reward compared to Modafinil

Yes, I have been legitimately prescribed these medications, and have tried each one.

Ritalin is so mild that I any tolerance build up would take years and years.
