    A new graphics card.

Basically, my current graphics card is shit. I need a new one to raise my frames per second for gaming. I have a dell dimension 4700 windows xp. I need to get a good graphics card. I want to be able to play detailed maps in Cs:s like dust etc.

If you need additional info, post here.

Are there any compatability issues I need to know about? Post everything I need to know before being sure I have the correct graphics card to install.

Well, first off all you need to check what fits on your motherboard, if it's really old it's likely to be AGP, newer boards have PCI-E or PCI. google AGP, PCI-E and PCI for pictures to compare it with. after that you'll need to check if your power supply can supply enough juice to keep your graphics card running, if it's not THAT old and you're not getting an extremely high-end card, you should be alright. After that it's buying time. ;) (I hope I didn't forget anything)

I was just going to say that

For CS and stuff like that, a higher 7series nvidia AGP card would work fine

if you have PCI-E, just get an nvidia 8600/9600, they are like 60 bucks

    A new graphics card.

I use an nVidia GeForce 7600GT. While not the most powerful card, it's cheap (you can generally get one for about $75 or less) and it runs generally anything I need it for. Runs Counter-Strike: Source and Team Fortress 2 as smooth as can be, handles Devil May Cry 4 rather well, so I'd recommend it if you aren't looking for anything intense.

the 7600GT is AGP, if you want PCI-X look for something from the 8600 or 9600 Series. 9600 was made as a replacement to the 8600, and isn't expensive, so maybe look in to that.

I don't see the point in maxing out graphics with thousand-dollar equipment if it will be outdated in half a year anyway.

    What happened?

Did it get better or worse?

One time I took my vista graphics card and stuck it in my Windows 95, and it got all fucked up :p!

    Hello Miss799 Apprentice

    A new graphics card.

Right now I have a 8600GT and I'll tell you, it's one of the best budget cards on the market. I actually play crysis on medium graphics with it.

As other have said just check how many watts your PSU has and if your MoBo has a pci-e slot.

Minimum PSU requirements for 8600GT is 250W and recommended is 350W

If you have a PCI-Express slot then maybe EVGA GTX 280 or ATI HD Radeon 4870x2

    A new graphics card.

funny how you refer to your pc's as the operating systems that they're running.

XFX or EVGA 8800Gt's are pretty decent for the price, you can run just any game with one. even an 8600gt can handle any map in cs:s, and is a pretty decent card. Although I would buy an EVGA 8600 gt, because it has a lifetime warranty, and a higher memory clock than the one that you're looking at.
