Is a mac... worth it?

Hey all,


I was thinking on buying a Macbook Pro. Anyone have any input? My friend told me it's overpriced and not worth it, but Macs seem pretty cool when I play with them in the apple store ^.^

I also heard Macs can't do many things Windows can. Such as running macro scripts, playing games, and other things.

 

Dont get mac, windows is better than mac, get like a dell xps laptop

It depends.

Macs are _EXCELLENT_ for schoolwork, graphics, media and general computing. Half of the people (probably most) that post in this thread won't have used a Mac for more than half an hour before saying "It sucks, get Windows." I love Macs, they're perfect for what I need them for (I don't actually own one though - I just spend most of my time on Linux).

Macs are the best option for general computing - once you get over the fact that you can't run your favourite Windows programs (which generally have a sufficient if not better replacement on Mac OSX) they are really quite enjoyable to use. I recommend them.

Edit: Antman, you ditch Mac and recommend Dell? That made me laugh.

 

No, disagreed. Macs are great depending on your type of job/personality.

If you are a gamer, like runescape, World of Warcraft or guildwars, then a good quality dell or alien ware running on windows xp is perfect.

However, if you are more into designing, song making e.t.c, then a mac running on the new snow OSX will be amazing, pirate CS3 and stuff and the mac will run smooth, i operate on a 8 core mac pro with top specs and i can have a maximum of 17 differnet adobe programs running before it lags me on runescape, its great for duel windowing too... but it costs a BOMB!

 

Dell and Alienware are both crap and overrated and can hardly compare to a decent custom PC.

If you want to play lots of games, get a PC. If you want to use a computer for studying and general computer use, get a Mac. It's really quite simple. The only real comparable thing in the equation is games and a minority of software.

 

go on costco and you can get a nice HP laptop 4 gigs of ram 250+GB of storage HD screen and stuff like that for 1500$

id say windows is better if you put some antivirus on it..

 

Yeah like stated above, they are overrated and overpriced.

 

I don't like Macs, you get more bang for your buck when going with normal PCs. Furthermore, Mac OS has an interface which reminds me of toys made by Fisher Price. I say go on eBay or buy custom parts for a regular PC running Windows and/or Linux.

 

Can anyone here actually give him a good reason why or why not to buy a Mac over a PC other than me? I've stated what each is best used for appropriately, but most of the people I see just say "I don't like this - get that."

 

Swan, you are very intellectual and your opinion is probably the best I heard so far. The mac would be for the sole purpose of the new school I'm going to, so I will trust in you and buy a Macbook Pro for school. Thanks

well its just macs are different so thats why people dont like them if you get used to them there better

 

i am writing this on a mac book pro 17" it is the best computer i have ever bought. it is great for all my school work, and surfing the web playing rs is top notch cause u can make the rs applet take up half the screen and be writing on word while woodcutting. it truly provides a high level of productivity. its has excellent ergonomics and is very fast. Get the gloss screen not the matte screen if you dont do alot of grahipcal engineering stuff.

Well Mac is the same, just a different operating system. It isn't that confusing unless you a forum retard ( excluding cody ) Just you have to get used to the different controls, it would take about up to a week.

If You like Gaming, specially downloading games, you need Windows, Macs are awesome for graphics, speed, and school work like SWAN mentioned.

 

I'm using a mac currently. Its: Fast, Convinient, the general layout is sexy, screen resolution = better that windows. Windows = Fail

a.) student discont = free ipod
b.) it'd be good for work
c.) they are pretty

 

Also, keep in mind that Windows is mainstream and probably what your school uses for just about everything. Consult with them first to see if buying a Mac instead of a PC will cause any problems for you throughout the school year.

 

Mac's are capable of running Windows XP/ Vista.
