There is a very easy guide on Google which you can find, it's a simple setting up discord ranks guide.

I got as far as to giving people different roles.

Discord setting up is actually a big deal & you should do it by yourself because each different role that you are assigning people have
all different sorts of permissions in the server which you would have to alter to each individual role that you are giving people.

Roles can be customized with a name / colour, I had roles which followed the ranks of RS clan chats, with colors that matched up
as best as I could. Every role had different permissions & colors.

It won't take that long to figure out.
