PHPBB or SMF?

hey i just got a website (.ca) not free website and im trying to install forums but cant decide which forum to use and i cant afford vbulletin so could you tell me the ups and downs of each and whichone is better?

 

It depends what you're looking for. I think PHPBB is far more versatile, but have more harmful exploits. SMF isn't as customizable (as far as I know) but is less likely to have harmful exploits. Both are relatively easy to use, so it's up to you.

 

when you say harmful exploits these are...

 

Exploits where people can figure out your password hash, get in the databse etc. Although as long as you keep updated, you shouldn't have any problems.

 

PHPBB has more customizable functions, but as MCR said, it has many more exploits.

 

SMF is like a wordpress forum. You can download the best plugins and themes, far better than phpbb, and they're usually nicer as well.

Phpbb3 has really shitty themes, whereas SMF has really nice ones.

Since when does phpBB have more exploits...? There are no currently known exploits, and even if there were, they would be privately owned exploits, and in which case, your site would hardly ever be the target of such an attack.

I say go with phpBB3. It's (more) widely used, many free skins are available, many modifications, and it is easy to get a hang of. If you know PHP, you can also easily develop for it yourself. (You can do it with SMF, just easier with phpbb)
